RG2E Guest Author Cate Dean Takes Us on a Journey of a Book Cover

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

Welcome to The RG2E and/or Welcome Back!

Today, we’re all going on a superfab adventure with RG2E Guest Author Cate Dean, who’s taking us on a Journey of a Book Cover.

Take it away, Cate…

As an independent author, I am in charge of every aspect of publishing my books. And that includes my book covers.

I spend a good amount of time with my cover artist to get the image just right. Have you ever wanted to know what goes into a book cover? Here is the journey of the cover for Last Chance Jack, from first sketch to final product.

The story is about a guardian angel, with a twist. I didn’t want a paranormal angel, or an angel that looked too – heavenly. So when I wrote up my first description and sent it off to my artist, here was the result:

A nice start, but I wanted something a bit more – something. Yep, my artist thought exactly the same thing. :) But after a few back and forth emails, she came up with this:

A much closer fit, but still a bit too contemporary. So, back again, this time with several versions of what would be the final (she always gives me multiple options, which I love, and hate):

Guess which one I chose? I won’t keep you in suspense – here is the final cover:

We took a couple elements from the multiple samples, and ended up with this version. I love it, and it really fits the story – which ain’t your usual guardian angel story.

I hope you enjoyed taking this little journey with me. I love collaborating on every book cover, and having the final say about what will finally represent my book. One of the many perks of calling all the shots. :)

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time – read on.

Cheers,

~Cate

Author Bio:
Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper. She grew up losing herself in the wilds of fantasy worlds, and has had some of her own adventures while tromping through the UK, and a few other parts of the world. A lover of all things supernatural, she infuses that love into her stories, giving them a unique edge. When she’s not writing, she loves cooking, scaring herself silly in the local cemeteries, and reading pretty much anything she can get her hands on.

  1. Cate, that was very interesting on how your cover was decided. I always wondered if the first design was chosen on some or if took longer. I know some authors don’t get a say in what their covers look like. I would love a copy of Last Chance Jack for Amazon Kindle. Thanks for sharing!

    • Hi Becky! Some of them are fairly simple – this one took longer because I didn’t want a typical angel. And I LOVE that I have total control over my covers. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. Thanks for sharing this, Cate! I don’t know how you could ever decide which colored cover was your favorite! I’ve been staring at the different versions for quite a while and admiring all of them!

  3. I love book covers, they are the first impression!
I am a very visual person. Book covers are like little pieces of Art.
i am drawn to a cover before I even consider the subject matter.
I can appreciate the time and attention that must go into this process to ensure that your hard work is not lost in the crowd.
I would love to read Last Chance Jack for Kindle please.

  4. Lovely cover, Cate. I just recently went through this process with a cover artist. Melody Simmons did a lovely job for me. The hardest part was choosing fonts. There are so many! Melody was great with the back and forth tweaking, and I’m sure I drove her crazy, but I’m very happy with the end product. it is so nice having control over what goes on the cover of our books.

  5. I love the cover. Its beautiful! Thanks for sharing! Sounds like a great book! Id love to read this on kindle please. Thank you!
