RG2E Featured Author Tamara Ward talks Epic Storylines and Cliffhangers

Happy Monday, RG2E Peeps!

Let’s give a Wonderful RG2E Welcome to Featured Author Tamara Ward, who’s talking Epic Storylines and Cliffhangers.

Take it away, Tamara…

Hi, everyone! I’m so happy to be here on the RG2E today talking about my new release,Hidden Betrayal. It’s the second novel in the Jade O’Reilly mystery series, which features sassy private investigator Jade O’Reilly. Right now, in addition to the two novels, four short stories also are included in the series. Jade’s got spunk, and a bit of an attitude, as well as three older brothers, a cute detective as her romantic interest, and a co-worker with the appearances and persona of a pug with severe indigestion. Jade is a lot of fun to write – and (I hope) to read!

ebook_hiddenbetrayal

In addition to the mysteries she sets out to solve, there’s also an overarching mystery that Jade is out to solve, one that is going to tie a series of five novels together. Without giving too much away, I’ll say that Jade wants to get resolution to her parents’ deaths. At the end of the novels, Jade finds pieces of resolution – but not the lasting kind or the kind that is entirely, neatly packaged (tightly taped shut, with a double-knotted bow). Readers won’t find this epic storyline in the short stories, just in the novels.

As an author, I admit I feel worried: Am I leaving too much unresolved at the end of each novel with Jade? I’ve read novels with epic storylines – novels that pull off the un-resolution to their overarching storylines successfully. And I’ve also read series where the novels end on cliffhangers that just leave me, the reader, feeling cheated in the worst way with heart-clenching irresolution. I hope and believe my novels provide adequate resolution. As a rule, I write my novels to be standalone – readers can read one without reading another. And the mystery/problem of each particular novel is completely resolved, one way or another. But Jade won’t find all the answers she’s looking for when it comes to her family – at least not until a few novels from now.

So about Hidden Betrayal: Here’s the blurb from the back cover…

Who isn’t hiding a secret? That’s what Private Investigator Jade O’Reilly wonders as she looks into the theft of an artifact destined for the local art museum. The artifact’s owner is a man so wealthy he could buy the county and who wouldn’t mind also investing time into Jade. His advances don’t please Keith, Jade’s romantic interest. But that’s not the only source of conflict in the developing relationship. Why doesn’t Keith want Jade applying to carry a concealed handgun? Will Keith convince Jade to scrap her application, or will Keith’s mind change as Jade’s investigation takes a deadly twist?

Hidden Betrayal is the second novel in the Jade O’Reilly Mystery series by Amazon Bestselling Mystery Author Tamara Ward. The first novel in the series, Private Deception, joins multiple short stories that follow Jade on other adventures. In all, action and light romance combine with engaging characters and humor for page-turning whodunits set in the fictional coastal town of Sweetwater, NC.

How do you feel, as a reader, about overarching storylines that aren’t resolved until the end of a series? Let me know, please, and if you’d like a free ebook copy of Hidden Betrayal, leave your email. At the end of the day, I’m drawing five winners from a hat.

Thanks so much! I hope you enjoy the read!

RG2E Featured Author Jill Hughey talks “The End”

Happy Tuesday, RG2E Peeps!

“The End”…as our fabulous RG2E Featured Author Jill Hughey says: “Every story has one.”

Take it away, Jill…

jill

Endings. Every story has one. As readers, we both dread and anticipate THE END of that rarest of gems, a book that has grabbed us by the eyeballs, refusing to let go until we reach the last…fabulous…page. We close the book with a sigh and a smile. We have achieved the satisfying ending.

Unfortunately, not all stories bring us all the way. Sometimes there are threads left, frayed and dangling, with no promise of a sequel to pick them up again. We are confused, with the cry of “Wait!” on our lips instead of “Yes!”

Endings can also be ambiguous, the reader abandoned to decide how it all goes down, like those dinner theaters where you vote to choose the murderer. Except there is no big choral finale before the curtain closes. The author thinks we should wrap this one up on our own, and we do, first because we are creative like that, and second because we don’t have much choice.

I don’t mind frayed or ambiguous endings as much as abrupt ones. An example of a fabulous story with a too-abrupt ending is the movie August Rush, a tale of love at first sight immediately stamped out by the girl’s wicked father, followed by a dozen years of separation and yearning, concluding with a hint of a reunion. What could be wrong with that, you might ask? They do get together at the end.

Go back to the DOZEN YEARS OF SEPARATION. Twelve years of longing ends with the man and woman taking one another’s hand while they see their son for the first time. Fade to a long shot of Central Park.

Wait! I just watched a mother who thought her baby died at birth and a father who didn’t know he was a father pine for each other for over a decade. Add in the wrongly orphaned boy who has been a ward of the state his whole life. The payoff is a clasp of hands and the three of them smiling with teary eyes?

Dear Mr. Screenwriter, Would it have been too much to ask to get a twenty-second glimpse into their future? You can even roll the credits over it. Here is the scene. They are in a sunny apartment kitchen with Mom packing a lunch while Dad and Boy doodle around on their guitars until Mom lovingly reminds them that school starts in twenty minutes. Mom and Dad share a stunningly happy smile while Boy wolfs down his homemade pancakes. You can fade out to emperor penguins for all I care now that I have seen the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow.

Like I said, I don’t appreciate abrupt endings. That is why I don’t write them. As a romance writer I always aim for a happy ending, but there is no law saying I have to end the book at the earliest glimmer of joy. I don’t want stories to conclude with the initial kiss or the first “I love you.” I long to see the couple adjust and struggle a little bit before I am forced to let them go.

I wrote a series of historical romances set in the 830s in Europe, specifically Charlemagne’s Empire. In each of the three books in the Evolution Series, my heroes and heroines have an issue to resolve together even after they fall in love.

My characters in Unbidden, the first book, finally declare their undying love about 80% through the story. David, the hero, still has a lesson to learn about misplaced family loyalty before we know for sure that the two of them will be okay. (Unbidden is free at Amazon April 9, 10, and 11 so go grab a copy! http://www.amzn.com/B0067DDX1M)

Redeemed features the villain from the first book. Love and trust do not come easily to my tortured hero, but when they do, he fiercely protects his wife from betrayal within their own home.

In Vain, my most recent release, the heroine is the one who holds back the longest while she struggles to believe that her proud, sometimes cruel husband, has finally fallen in love with her. (One reviewer said, “Theo can be a genuine bastard at times.” I absolutely loved that assessment!)

Cover600x900

Each of my books lets readers see that the happy couple is really together, pulling in the same direction, working as a team, because that is the kind of ending I like.

So, how about some chatter? Tell me your ideal “Yes!” ending or bluster about the type that makes you scream “Wait!” I will give one ebook copy of Vain to one commenter chosen by RG2E. Don’t forget that Unbidden is free April 9, 10, and 11.

~~~Jill
Despite her ranting, Jill still watches August Rush at least twice a year because 99% of the story is so darn good. Jill can be found at her blog, on Facebook, and she tweets @jillhughey.
Vain: Book Three in the Evolution Series: A tailor’s abandoned daughter fashions a vain nobleman’s tunic, finding passion between the neckline and hem as misfortune forces her into his precarious aristocratic world. Vain is available at the following vendors.
Amazon     Barnes and Noble     Kobo     Smashwords     Createspace
**********************************
Superfab fun scoop, Jill!
When it comes to endings, I luv a satisfying ending to the current story problem with a wee bit on a new problem, which means “oh yeah…there will be a sequel!”
Thanks bunches for sharing your thoughts as well as treating us all to a FREE book and a chance to win VAIN! U rock!!!
RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens on “Fame: Would You Remember My Name?”
Two years ago, after a two plus month ordeal, 33 trapped men were rescued from a mine in Chile while the world looked on and sympathized with their plight. For a time, these men became famous, the fulcrum of international news. They met with their country’s President and were promised fancy book and movie deals about their ordeal. It seemed like their fate would change. They’d go from gang-ridden neighborhoods to a nice, comfortable home, like those in the US suburbs, where they could raise their families in peace. The reality? Although some donations came through, the future of these men remained far from certain.
Some of the men could have taken other jobs, or offered better opportunities. Yet, there was a dark side to all of this. It appeared some of the water consumed by them, for lack of an alternative, had a metallic taste. This could translate to serious health issues now or in the future. Also, their residency below ground brought on some tensions among the men. While the story was in the news, concrete help from the government was not yet forthcoming. This story was not just a story of solidarity and overcoming odds. It was also a story of extreme adversity, media spin, and the outcome of it was hazy at best. The good thing that came out of it was that all men were saved. Yet, life from there on would be a gamble, especially on the financial and health side.PONDERING A THOUGHT OR TWO:
This type of situation isn’t new. I’m not referring to people being horribly trapped in a mine (which we know has happened before) – but I’m talking about poor, underprivileged people being offered an ace card for a few minutes, only to have it stripped from them at the end. People who got 15 minutes of fame, and that’s all. Many have followed the controversial story of the “Slumdog Millionaire” movie protagonists, the child actors who garnered world fame with well-received performances, only to be sent back soon thereafter to the slums they came from without so much as a by-your-leave.Luckily, some have a bigger break. After being given her fame card through Julia Roberts’ portrayal of her in a blockbuster movie, Erin Brockovich, for instance, got her own show for a while and her book Take It From Me: Life’s a Struggle But You Can Win made it to the NYT bestseller list.The Subway guy, Jared Fogle, wrote a book and is still known for his Subway diet. Many participants on reality TV shows get their dream to be in the limelight fulfilled.
Jon and Kate plus 8The BachelorSurvivor… and the like – these are just a few examples. How long will their fame last and what gifts or curses will it bring them?
This makes me think of books and why we love the underdog characters so much – characters that are strong and resilient, and make it in the end. We all like to read about people who achieved success after a tough time because so often we imagine ourselves in that position and we can truly relate.THE LESSON OF THE HOUR:Sometimes perseverance plays a part in achieving fame, success and recognition. At times, being at the right place at the right time is the main contributor. What is always important, however, is that one has good representation, that is, someone with them who has their interests at heart. The miners in Chile and the actors in Slumdog Millionaire will never improve their lives unless someone—someone important, someone with clout—is willing to go to bat for them and be their voice. A person or institution who’s not there just to draw the news of the hour, make a buck, lift ratings, make a good impression and/or offer empty promises. Some think that fame can come in an instant – this is true, but is it always lasting? Does it bring positive change? Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy or clear-cut.
So my thing is, let yourself be your most ardent representative. I suppose one thing I love about the indie authors I’m surrounded by is that they’ve taken the chance to look out for themselves and to shoulder the responsibility for their little failures and ultimate successes. If you look around you, you’ll see the underdog at work, struggling to get out of a rut and be noticed, even just for a minute. Indie authors do this every day, hoping to touch the readers’ hearts. We are everywhere and you may know a few personally. It could be someone close to you, far from you, or it could even be you. As the sayings go, quite truthfully, there are moments when life’s a bi*ch then shit happens. But it’s all worth it anyway, at least I like to think so because for me it’s absolutely worth the work.And here’s the question of the hour, dear RG2Eland: If you had the opportunity to get your fifteen minutes of fame, how would you like that story to unfold?Until next time…
Natalie G. Owens got her first taste of serious writing by
penning award-winning poetry, as well as feature articles for college and local
romances with a dark edge featuring brooding heroes, strong heroines, exotic
RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on Her Favorite Reader Comment “I Wish It Were Longer…”
Happy Monday, RG2E Peeps!
For an author, nothing beats knowing our readers are really loving our books and want more.
Here’s RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on that very thing…
SJN Author photo
“I wish it were longer…”
As an author, those are words I love to hear. It means the reader wanted more. They loved the book, but didn’t want it to end so they could continue to spend time with their new ‘friends.’ Not to be confused with “The story ended too soon,” which many times means the reader wasn’t satisfied with the way the story ended.
I have a shorter story that has received both these responses. The readers who wish for more usually leave a great review. The ones who say it ended too soon, well…not so much. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and this is not to complain about the readers who expected more. I am sorry if I let them down.
The thing is for me, when I wrote the final sentence for that story, it was done. My characters were on their way to their Happily Ever After (HEA), and there was nothing left to tell. Forcing more wouldn’t have satisfied me, or any of my readers.
Then came my story Beneath Still Waters (Part One), in the Tales From The Mist anthology.
Tales_From_the_Mist_cover - final
An old legend tells of a beautiful witch unjustly persecuted who became a ghost bent on revenge…
The danger lies in not believing.
On a sorority camping trip in the Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park, Becca scoffs at the story of the Ghost of Still Waters, despite the convictions of her fellow campers, Liz and Shane. When Liz challenges her to summon the witch’s spirit, will Becca’s disbelief seal her fate?
I was writing to a word count limit, but the closer I got to 8,000 words, the more antsy I got, because I could feel there was no way the characters’ story would truly be finished to my satisfaction within that limit. But I really wanted to be part of the wonderful collaboration of stories, so I wrapped BSW up, and then decided to write a sequel.
Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two) took me by surprise, too. What I’d expected to be about 15,000 words morphed into 35,000 before the characters stopped ‘talking’ and I could give them the ending they’d earned. And you know what…there’s still the remote possibility that one of the characters from this series will start talking to me in the future.
If she does, there will be a Still Waters (Part Three).
In the meantime I’d love to offer five ebook copies of Tales From The Mist today. Hopefully you’ll WISH Beneath Still Waters was longer and pick up a copy of Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two).
Rising_Above_ebook_cover_1333x2000
Imagine you’ve lived before, but don’t remember or believe it’s even possible. Therein lies the danger. For in not believing and learning from your pasts, the power shifts to the one who would see you dead. Again.
Ryan James never gave much thought to ghosts or the idea of reincarnation—until the appearance of the beautiful Ali Whitman triggers terrifying visions that feel like real life. As he pieces together their past lives, he discovers they aren’t the only players. Worse, if he can’t convince Ali to believe before their past adversary makes the next move, he’ll lose her all over again.
And now, my question for you lovely readers: Do you more often find yourself wishing a story were longer, or thinking it ended too soon?
Let me know in the comments, along with your email address, and I’ll draw 5 winners for a download of the Tales From The Mist ebook.
Thank you for stopping by today!
RG2E Featured Author Christy Hayes asks “Book Clubs…What’s Your Stance?”
TGIF, RG2E Peeps!
What a wonderful week of Ereading we’ve enjoyed together!!! I can’t wait to tally up all of your fabulous comments!
In the meantime, let’s give a warm welcome to RG2E Featured Author Christy Hayes.
Christy has a question for u…
Book Clubs…What’s Your Stance?
Take it away, Christy…
I belong to a book club, or, I used to. My book club fizzled out and I’m not really sure why. Our group was small, our reading tastes similar, and we all loved to read. I think we no longer meet because we couldn’t find a time when all our members could get together.
I miss being in a book club for many reasons. I loved reading books that I would never have picked up on my own. I read books about other cultures, I discovered unknown-to-me authors, and I marveled at the different things people walk away from a book appreciating.
Often, the members of my group were drawn to certain characters and plot points in the books we read. Listening to the members discuss the things they liked and didn’t like was fascinating. As an author, I miss having that research group at my fingertips.
Many authors will admit they read differently since they started writing. I find it much harder to enjoy a book and really lose myself in the story because I’m too busy dissecting the plot, looking for the hook, anticipating the climax, and thinking of ways I would have written the book differently. I know I’ve discovered a truly gifted author when I no longer look for these things and just get caught up in the story.
So what about you, RG2E? Are you in a book club? If so, what do you appreciate most about the experience?
I’ll be giving away my romantic women’s fiction title, Angle of Incidence, today at RG2E.
Angle cover 960x1280jpeg
Here’s a short synopsis:
Gwen Perry has the picture perfect life. Her Washington D.C. based photography business is booming, her husband’s law career is lucrative, and after years of trying, they’re only months away from the birth of their first child.
While a nasty turn of fate leaves Gwen devastated, angry, and on the verge of depression, her husband Rob walks a dangerous tight rope. He’s hiding something from Gwen that could destroy their marriage. But even the deepest secrets won’t stay buried forever.
When Rob’s past is revealed, Gwen agrees to join her college friend at the artists’ retreat he’s leading in Colorado despite the consequences to her marriage. But Rob’s not the only one keeping secrets from the past and her trip down memory lane could burn the bridge leading her back home.
istock_000016922051xsmall
Here’s how it will work…
Each day (or several times per day-each time you read a bit more), stop by The RG2E, and leave a comment in this post answering the following questions:
1.) What time of day did you Eread? (Examples: during my lunch break, on the commute to and from work, while waiting on my children at various sporting event practices or games or other activities, after supper, in bed before going to sleep, etc.)
2.) Where did you Eread? (Examples: on the subway or train, in the car, in my company’s breakroom, at home in my fave reading chair, in bed, in the kitchen while preparing a meal, etc.
3.) How many pages did you Eread today? (of if your Ebook doesn’t have a page count…just let us know the percentage of each book you’ve completed)
***Note: If you want to toss in what you read and any other cool scoop you’d like to add about your reading habits over our experiment period, go ahead!
I’ll tally up everything you comment on and do a fabulous wrap-up so we can all see how much Ereading is a part of our every day lives.
Sound fun?!
Also, every time you comment, I’ll add your name to a “magick hat,” and throughout the week, you’ll have chances to win Gift Cards (Amazon, B&N, or Kobo – winners’ choices).
Okay…ready…set…Eread…then Show-and-Tell us About It, Peeps!!!
RG2E Featured Thriller Author Seeley James talks “Making It Real” For You, The Readers
Happy Hump Day, RG2E Peeps!
Many of your featured authors here at The RG2E write fiction. But here’s the thing…even though we’re writing fiction, we need to make it as “real” as we can to treat you, as our readers, to a fabulous adventure.
Here’s Thriller Author Seeley James on that very topic…
2012-11-15-Portrait-h720 (1)
Main characters have to feel real or you, the reader, will abandon them. I write thrillers and I’m forever striving to write that perfect visceral character. Hemingway’s advice: “From all things that you know and all those you cannot know, you make something through your invention that is not a representation but a whole new thing truer than anything true and alive.”
I wanted to make a thriller heroine who was a whole new thing from a unique experience in my life that I felt perfect for a heroine’s backstory. The part I cannot know, the elements that my character keeps hidden, presented a challenge.
The true story is stranger than fiction.
James Rollins once said, “You can write a story about telepathic marsupials in Antarctica as long as you have the Starbucks in Kansas City on exactly the same corner as the real one. Put it on the wrong side of the street, and telepathic marsupials cease to exist in the reader’s mind.”
Thrillers tend to avoid family members for that reason.* If we get the family relationships wrong, we lose you. Did Sherlock Holmes’ mother hound him about marriage? Did James Bond ever drive his daughter to soccer practice? Would Hercule Poirot take cooking tips from his sister? Writers leave out the one thing we all have in common, family, to avoid complications.
Cowards.
I wanted my heroine to have an involved father. And not a wise, calm and patient father from central casting either. I wanted an accidental father. One who was not even the biological father but was tossed into the role by fate.
When I was nineteen, an acquaintance told me that daycare costs were killing her. She had been sixteen when she conceived her daughter and three years later was working a night shift. She asked if I could help by watching her child from the time I got off work until she came home at midnight. Without realizing how that would change my life, I said, “Sure!”
The next day, I stopped at the daycare facility and announced that I was there to pick up a child. I didn’t know the mother’s last name, and didn’t know the child’s name. And they looked at me blankly. (This was before people worried about child abduction.)
I’d seen the girl once at a distance and described her to the daycare workers: she’s about so high, three years old, blonde hair. They took me to a room filled with three year olds about so high with blonde hair. It struck me that I might have been a bit unprepared for the responsibility I’d agreed to shoulder.
The workers looked at me. I looked at them.
A little girl came running out of the crowd, her arms outstretched, shouting, Daddy, Daddy Daddy, and leapt into my arms. She squeezed me tight with unconditional love and never let go—for the next thirty-seven years and counting.**
As so often happens in unplanned teenaged parenthood, her biological mother had every intention of being a good mother, but jumped at the chance to start over when I offered to raise the child.
I had no idea what was involved.
I only knew that for the first time in my life I was desperately important to someone. We all want to be important to someone. It is the primary motivator in human life.
Experiencing the dynamics of an inextricable relationship was something I felt you wanted in a thriller. The trick was to make it fascinating. The real story would never work in fiction; it would come off as manipulative or melodramatic. It needed a better, more believable catalyst.
I experimented with short stories, piecing together the things I know and the things I cannot know, and came up with a back story. When my editor read it, he said, No one will believe it in one big chunk. Dole it out over the course of the three plus books. I took his advice.
After all, my first priority was making sure the Starbucks was on the right corner.
Peace, Seeley
* Yes, I know there are exceptions like Zoe Sharp’s Charlie Fox and James Rollins’ Gray Pierce, can you just bear with me a minute?
** There was a small gap in that love-fest when she was a teenager, but we survived. She just turned forty and lives in Seattle with her husband and children. We talk regularly.
About Seeley:
Seeley James is the author of the Pia Sabel series of thriller short stories and novels. He was first published in The Battered Suitcase, was a Finalist for DeMarini Award in fiction, and was short listed for the Fish Publishing Award and the Debut Dagger Award.
He discovered his love of creativity at an early age, growing up at Frank Lloyd Wright’s School of Architecture in Arizona and Wisconsin. He carried his imagination first into a successful career in advertising and marketing, and then to his real love: fiction.
He created Pia Sabel to be the kind of character that his friends and children would want to read. James has three children; he adopted his first, a precocious and beautiful three-year-old girl, when he was a single nineteen year old. Twenty years later he married, and he and his wife have two more children. They live in Scottsdale, Arizona, and enjoy youth soccer games and sunshine.
