Happy Weekend, RG2E Peeps!
Welcome to The RG2E and/or Welcome Back!
Today, we’re goin’ across the pond to chat with UK Author Emma Calin.
Take it away, Emma…
I think I was born at the end of the 45rpm music single era. Maybe this is why I have always been drawn to the uncluttered ristretto fix of the short story. The French tradition of “chanson” where the singer tells a one off account has also been a big influence on me. More than anything, the style of Edith Piaf relating situations from working class life moved me as a young woman and led me to learn French.
My story THE CHOSEN is the playing out of an incident involving a couple of penniless men trying to get by. Their relationship is complex and their attitudes very different. Off stage there is a love story that dictates the action. It is also an attempt to look hard at our contemporary values and pose some questions.
The text comes with a free audio track. I have always believed in the spoken word which for me has a greater vibrancy than print alone. Literacy for the masses has a very short history compared to that of the story told around the fire or in a public place. A natural length in terms of attention span is about twenty minutes and this is what I have tried to achieve. There is also the aspect of accent and dialect. I find it very difficult to read speech written in dialect. For this reason THE CHOSEN is written in plain English whereas in fact the two characters have very different accents. Essentially the text and audio versions are entirely different pieces of work. I have been able to call upon the poet Oscar Sparrow to do the recording since he is used to public performance. Personally I love the job he has done.
Much of my writing career has involved the commercial short story. My first novel KNOCKOUT! is an unashamed commercial romance. The success of my short SUB-PRIME both in terms of sales, prize winning and critical reception has always surprised me. It is a story from the neglected side of the slave labour market. Since I wrote it, many revelations have come to public attention and I believe I have profited from that. THE CHOSEN is lighter but contains no artificial or idealised romance. In fact, it is because life is like it is that there is a huge joy in writing unapologetic escapist and sexy love stories.

Book Blurb: THE CHOSEN by Emma Calin
A woman, a man, a van and a plan. When the luck runs out; the lucky walk away. A short story set in the extremis of everyday.
Amazon 5* Reviews:
R. Stephen Woodfin (East Texas) – Why love drives you crazy
The Chosen is the second of Emma Calin’s short stories I have read. Both are jewels that come at life from the underside of the leaf. They are stories of ordinary, common people who hold to their dreams and reach for things beyond their grasp. The Chosen is a story about unquenchable hope, ill-founded on a love sure to go bad. It is about hare-brained schemes, not thought-through, sure to fail. The first sentence sums it up: “Of course, there had to be a woman in the story.”
Of course. I also enjoyed Oscar Sparrow’s narration of the free audio version of the story available to purchasers of the book.
Sheryl S. Brown (UK) – An Absolute Gem!
What a little gem of a story. After a busy weekend (and having a migraine), I wanted something that would take my mind off my headache – and something I wouldn’t have to actually read. I chose The Chosen – a story about two rogues who are completely relatable to – one about to make the big time, one a realist, both with suspect backgrounds. Emma Calin’s characterisation is excellent – I could totally visualise this pair, right down to the look in their eyes. The dialogue, too, was spot on, completely believable, and the narration was perfect. Loved the twist at the end. The line about the origins of the book (not wishing to give too much away) made me chuckle. Gripping. Intriguing. In short, loved it!
Emma Calin was born in London in 1962. She currently lives in France and the UK.
She has been writing since childhood and has won numerous local, national and international prizes for poetry and short stories.
KNOCKOUT! A PASSIONATE POLICE ROMANCE is a love story set against a backdrop of international gambling corruption and deception. Interpol cop Anna Leyton finds herself torn between love and duty when her professional and private life intersects. A video teaser for this book is available in the right hand column of this author page, below the blog – it shows a scene from the trailer of a bedroom with the caption “desire consumes”. This book is now available in both paperback and Kindle formats.
SUB-PRIME is a prize-winning hard hitting short story about courage, exploitation and love. It is a raw and brutal exposé of life at the bottom in the aftermath of recession. Available in Kindle format which includes a downloadable audiobook
THE CHOSEN is the brand new short story which is being given away here on RG2E. It is set in modern times where working people struggle to keep their dreams alive. A world where the promise of love motivates desperate measures. Available in Kindle format, which includes a downloadable audio track.
