I love Halloween.  To me, it’s the most wonderful time of the year. It’s the one time when the real me can emerge without the raised eyebrows and gaping stares. Why, you may ask would this be? Well, dear reader, I’m sort of a middle aged Goth. My license plate says DRKLILY. That’s Dark Lily phonetically. I get a lot of questions on that, with people seeing everything in the letters from Drunk Lily to Dr. Klily. I look at it this way, it works like an ink block; people see what they want to. Most get it, Dark Lily. But every so often someone tells me how much they love my ‘drunk lily’ vanity plate and I have to shake my head and wonder about them.

As a child, my TV heroines were Morticia Addams and Lily Munster.

I thought these ladies were so elegant in their long black hair and flowing gowns. I loved the Gothic feel of those shows, the dark atmosphere coupled with the extreme campiness.  I secretly wished I could have lived in that world growing up. When Anne Rice’s novel, Interview with the Vampire was first released I devoured it at the tender age sixteen (more than a few decades before the Twilight craze) and I fell in love with Louis, the tortured, angst ridden vampire protagonist. I since went on to discover Mr. Rochester of Jane Eyre fame and Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, although I have some problems with Heathcliff’s innate cruelty, I still could not forget his dark devotion to Cathy in life and death. My Gothic Romance: When I wrote the novel of my heart, Dark Hero, several years ago, I had a lot to live up to when it came to tortured heroes who were devoted to their ladies. Dark Hero is a Gothic Romance. Imagine a kinder, gentler Heathcliff falls in love with The Ghost Whisperer. The hero is tortured, angst ridden and tends to like to hide behind masks–both literal and metaphorical–as he uses false identities to insulate himself from the world. As a scientist and a former pirate, he uses both his wit and his physical strength to win the battle.

Dark Hero is also a historical romance, so I can get away with the swashbuckling pirate who dissects corpses for scientific research (a little Dr. Frankenstein thrown in). The Heroine has inherited the gift of the seer. She can see and speak with the dead. The females in her family were powerful in the magical arts, but she’s trying to ignore that unconventional inherited quirk and just be ‘normal’ like everyone else. These quirks give her trouble with the hero, as he’s a stickler for logic and reason. I placed the pair in a neglected manor house with plenty of ghosts–one who is becoming increasingly violent toward the heroine. So Dark Hero is also a paranormal romance as there is a strong supernatural element in play. The key to the heroine’s release from the haunting and the evil stalking her is within herself, but she’s afraid to tap into her dark side and use the magical powers within her and set herself free–kind of like the rest of us.

Did I mention that I love Halloween? It’s the time of year to celebrate the dark side of life. Television features all those great horror flicks from the past decades and newer ones to tempt our palate. I can put fake tombstones and ghosts up on the front lawn, hang plastic pirate skeletons from the porch. I can play a CD of creepy organ music as I dress in black and quietly sip a Bat Bite out of a silver chalice and hand out goodies to the kids brave enough to dress up as their favorite fantasy character for one day out of the year!

Me, I’ll be dressed as Dark Lily, distant cousin of Morticia Addams, of course.

I write historical romance, and so I really want to know what touches reader’s hearts when it comes to a romance hero. It’s your turn! What do you like in a romance hero? What don’t you like? Thanks for having me on the RG2E today, DeeDee!

Hi everyone, I’m Dana Delamar, and I write gritty, steamy romantic suspense. It took me a while to choose my genre; I tried writing contemporary romance first but soon realized that I wanted to meld my love of suspense and romance, so that led me to romantic suspense. However, I didn’t want to write a typical police procedural. I wanted to do something different. And I wanted a different sort of hero–someone who lives by his own rules, but who also tries to do the right thing in the end, even if his definition of the right thing doesn’t quite fit society’s expectations.

After picking Italy (my favorite country outside the U.S.) for my setting, the choice of a Mafia don as my hero came pretty quickly. Once that decision was made, I immediately started researching the Mafia, which is when I learned about a group I’d never heard of: the Calabrian Mafia (aka the ‘Ndrangheta, or “The Honored Society”), which is considered today to be the most powerful Mafia in Italy, possibly even the world.

These guys aren’t the Sicilian Mafia that we’re all familiar with from “The Godfather.” The ‘Ndrangheta (pronounced en DRANG eh tah) maintain a very low profile and extreme secrecy. And they do it by recruiting almost exclusively from within their blood families. Who’d be willing to rat on their own flesh and blood? No one, that’s who.

This decision to keep it all in the family has worked very, very well for the ‘Ndrangheta. Within the last decade or so, they’ve quickly risen to power and are estimated (as of 2007) to control roughly 3% of Italy’s GDP, or somewhere in the neighborhood of 44 billion euros.

Very bad boys with incredible wealth and power, who live in their own secret society? How could I pass that challenge up? And thus my current series, “Blood and Honor,” was born.

Book 1 of “Blood and Honor” is Revenge.

Here’s what it’s about:

A woman on the run. A damaged Mafia don. A rival bent on revenge…

Kate Andretti is married to the Mob–but doesn’t know it. When her husband uproots them to Italy, Kate leaves everything she knows behind. Alone in a foreign land, she finds herself locked in a battle for her life against a husband and a family who will “silence” her if she will not do as they wish. When her husband tries to kill her, she accepts the protection offered by a wealthy businessman with Mafia ties. He’s not a mobster, he claims. Or is he?

Enrico Lucchesi never wanted to be a Mafia don, and now he’s caught in the middle of a blood feud with the Andretti family. His decision to help Kate brings the feud between the families to a boil. When Enrico is betrayed by someone in his own family, the two of them must sort out enemies from friends–and rely on each other or die alone. The only problem? Enrico cannot reveal his identity to Kate, or she’ll bolt from his protection, and he’ll be duty-bound to kill her to safeguard his family’s secret.

Attacks from without and within push them both to the breaking point, and soon Enrico is forced to choose between protecting the only world he knows and saving the woman he loves.

I saw a funny cartoon on Facebook a while back. It said something like, “I’m an apocaloptomist; I know the world is doomed, but I believe everything will be okay anyway.” At the time, I remember laughing and thinking, that’s me! With all the hype about the Mayan calendar predicting the end of an age come this December, the pivotal political race looming, and the global economy circling the drain, not to mention Mother nature’s wrath wreaking havoc (hello Super-storm Sandy!), everyone is a bit…well…nervous might be an understatement. People have plenty of reasons to be on edge.

But here’s my take—there isn’t a darn thing we can do to stop any of it. Sure, we can vote for the leader least likely to hurry the process of inevitable collapse, but let’s face it, every culture has its day in the sun, rises and falls, and then disappears. Worrying yourself sick about it serves no purpose but to increase the climate of fear and ruin a perfectly good rest of your life. Many years ago, I learned a valuable lesson in synonyms from scripture. The definition of fear is, believing what you cannot see will come to pass. The definition of faith is, believing what you cannot see will come to pass. Ironic, huh? You can either live in fear or live in faith. I choose to live in faith.

When I wrote WANING MOON, Book One in The Chronicles of Lily Carmichael, a dystopian trilogy, I did a lot of research about what kinds of technology might survive a post-apocalyptic future, how people might adapt to a threatening environment, and what the world—at least our little part of it here in the US—would look like. I watched a ton of episodes of Doomsday Preppers, National Geographic specials on climate change and polar shifts, and Discovery channel episodes about high tech medical advances and space travel. My husband, having worked for thirty years as a space suit engineer and shuttle technician gave me invaluable insights into technology and where it could lead us.

The truth is our doom could come from any direction. To survive we need to adapt, improvise and overcome—a military credo that my characters live by. In my story, I chose a viral plague that wipes out three quarters of the population and a polar shift that threatens the rest of humanity with extinction. I know—cheery thought, right? I figured Mother Nature strives to find balance, and the biggest threat to her survival is overpopulation. With seven billion people doing their darndest to greedily suck the life out of her, the earth is bound to fight back. What better equalizer than a virulent strain of a microscopic bug that kicks our collective butts to kingdom come. Oh, the irony! We think we’re so tough. But really that’s all it would take for our world to be tipped upside down. A bug!

Irony being one of my favorite nemesis (nemesis’s? nemeses?), I thought the plague a fitting end, since it wouldn’t discriminate against the poor, the rich, and everyone in between. With rampant terrorism and today’s global travel, a world-wide pandemic is not much of a stretch. For good measure, I added a slight polar shift (something that is already happening), that would force a level playing field for survivors. Money can’t buy you out of an earthquake, tsunami, or tornado. Of course, our scientists would step up to the challenge and eventually find a cure for the virus and a way to create barriers against the solar radiation that would slowly kill us all with cancer. They could conceivably figure out a way to make fetuses in the womb immune, but at what cost—‘cause you know there is always a cost to messing with nature.

In sixteen year-old Lily Carmichael’s case, she is born with the ability to heal very quickly and also to heal others. Now as far-fetched as that may sound, I am a healer, and I believe that with a slight boost to my energetic field, I could do exactly what Lily does. If you think me a tad frou-frou, you’ve never had work done by a really good energy worker. My day job as a Massage Therapist keeps me very busy. If you doubt my superpowers, just ask my clientsJ

Imagine Lily’s conflict, though, when her healing abilities don’t work on her beloved uncle who is dying of cancer and she must travel to the trading city of Albany to find a cure for Sam. To challenge Lily further, our young and beleaguered heroine has to keep her gift hidden from the Industry, a rogue government agency set on capturing these genetically enhanced teens. To complicate matters, her thirteen-year-old brother has an opposing ability that is even more valuable to the Industry. He can take life with just a touch. Add some teenage hormones and a murdered Industry agent and you’ve got a real dilemma for both Lily and her brother Zephron whom she has vowed to protect.

When seventeen-year-old drifter Will Callahan shows up and Lily rescues and heals him, her secret is bound to get out. As if Lily doesn’t have enough drama, she is forced to deal with her growing attraction to Will who has his own secrets that could lead them both into harm’s way. I added a couple of loveable wolves, some interesting secondary characters, and a ticking clock for humanity, and I must say the apocalypse is looking mighty interesting. But I say FEAR NOT…oohhh, the author goddess speaks…perhaps it will take someone just like Lily to save the world. As long as there is faith, hope, and love, we have a chance!

I had so much fun writing Zeph’s character, I had to give him his own voice by writing a short story prequel in his point of view, called SOUL REDEMPTION, which is part of the WG2E All for Indies Anthologies Spooky Edition. You don’t have to read the prequel to enjoy the trilogy, but it definitely gives a deeper appreciation for what Lily faces, and why the story unfolds as it does. It also gives you a peek into the conflicted and creepy mind of a would-be killer—the perfect addition to a spooky anthology.

In honor of All Hallows Eve and Super-storm Sandy, I’ll be gifting copies of the Anthology along with e-copies of WANING MOON today. RG2E Featured Author Nancy Lee Badger talks “Mixing Historical and Present Day Worlds”

Here’s a terrific way to Mix Historical Worlds with Present Day Worlds, compliments of RG2E Featured Author Nancy Lee Badger.

History classes bored me in high school until I picked up a book set in the past. I was hooked! When I turned to writing my own stories, with an eye toward publication, I initially shied away from writing anything filled with history since I hadn’t quite paid attention in class. Contemporary romance was comforting; something I knew; something sellable.

After writing several books, I tried something historical. Eek! What was I thinking? I had a paranormal story in my head, but needed a setting. I used books, maps, and the internet to pick an uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland. It sounded perfect for a dragon’s lair. While searching, I discovered that a brutal massacre had occurred in the 16th century on another island. I incorporated the two islands as well as the historical event to spin an idea into Dragon’s Curse, released by Whispers Publishing in 2010.

Several books later, this brings me to why I tried Indie publishing. While volunteering at the New Hampshire Highland Games every September, I noticed history was all around me. How much easier it is to see, hear, and smell the history up close! Using this free info, I created my self-published series set partially at Scottish Highland games. I love writing a book, creating a cover, and uploading it everywhere: I love it as much as traveling. The freedom to write the book of my heart, and the ability to use what I know, is priceless.

And the royalties keep coming.

With my trusty camera, I photographed the sight of hunky guys wearing colorful kilts. With my video button, I recorded marching bands and bagpipers in action. My taste buds sampled the haggis, meat pies, and shortbread. I filled the pages of my notebook with ideas for plots, characters, and events that might find their way into a book. Many of the ideas morphed into the first book in a series I call the Highland Games Through Time. My Honorable Highlander, the first book, is a Scottish time travel romance that includes a page-turning battle then transports the reader to the fictional New England Highland Games. Athletics, Scottish food, marching bands, Highland dancers, sword fights, and kilt-wearing Highlanders fill the pages. There are plenty of plot ideas just waiting to be discovered and used in the next few books in the series.

I used historical fact to bring my self-published time travel series to life. Mixing Scottish history with present day events worked for me. Ever wonder about “A Day in the Glamorous Life of an Indie Epublished Author”? Well, wonder no more! 🙂 Here’s RG2E Featured Author Laina Turner to give you her version…

When I started my career as an indie pub’d author a few years ago I had no idea it would be so wonderful. I was used to a normal middle class life and after publishing my first ebook I was thrown into this lifestyle that even today is sometimes unbelievable.

My day starts out at 5am when I wake up to find my personal trainer waiting in the home gym with a fresh strawberry and seaweed smoothie I drink for energy. I then suffer through a grueling workout keeping me in a fit body that would make Jennifer Aniston envious. I then proceed to the veranda where my chef prepares me a five star breakfast. I enjoy my breakfast while the nanny gets my kids fed and ready for school and I take a moment to give them a kiss before the nanny takes them to the bus stop. Once the house is quiet I make my way to my office where my assistant gives me my call sheet and to do list for the day. I effortlessly knock out 5000 words toward my next novel while my assistant makes a personal shopping appointment at Neiman Marcus for later that afternoon, I have a television interview I need a new outfit for.

The kids come home and we play for a bit before they head off to do their homework and dress for dinner. My chef prepares another fantastic gourmet meal, low-fat of course which we take in the formal dining room, and then the nanny takes the kids to get ready for bed while I enjoy a massage and facial to help my body recover from the long day. I then go tell my assistant she can go home as long as the tweets she was to schedule are completed and I head off to bed with a glass of wine and relax watching a Lifetime movie for women. A short eight hours later my alarm goes off and I start it all over again. It’s grueling but worth it.

You could still smoke on airplanes.  I opted out of that section.  But the ‘obnoxious toad’ next to me, lit up the smelliest cigar! And that scene is in the book, too.

Hi Readers:

I’m ashamed, but I must confess to you.  I’m a thief.  No, I don’t pilfer glittering jewels, original paintings, or even packs of gum.  What I do steal are your words, experiences, mannerisms, and emotions.  In other words, I’m a writer.  British author Nina Bawden is credited for saying that “All writers are thieves.”   I couldn’t agree with her more.

Recently, I released my first novel, a romantic comedy entitled St. Anne’s Day.  The book is littered with looted lines, embezzled experiences, and misappropriated mannerism.  Although she is not the main character of the novel, Peg McMaster, is the mother of Gerry, who is the heartthrob of the novel.  Anne, our heroine, against her better judgment, has fallen for him.  I’ve had numerous readers contact me to say how much they love Peg because she seems so real and comes out with some hilarious remarks.  She should seem real—I stole her from life.

Actually, I stole both my maternal and paternal grandmothers and fused them to create Peg, a character who often upstages the others.  My maternal grandmother, Gert, was a cigarette-smoking, novel-reading, vulgarity-speaking easy going sort.  Although she was Catholic like Peg in the book, she rarely went to church.  However, she did send lots of money to religious charities who, to show their deep appreciation, sent her such holy trinkets as thermometers embedded in plastic fish skeletons and glow-in-the-dark rosary beads.

Conversely, my paternal grandmother, Agnes, never smoked, never swore, never read novels and went to Mass several times a week and was a more structured type.  Amazingly, both of my grandmothers liked and respected each other.  Perhaps because they both spoke so colorfully.  If something startling happened, Grandma Aggie would exclaim, “Oh, God help us,” while Grandma Gert would snap, “Son of a b*&#ch!

Many of the things Peg says in the book have come directly from their lips.  When Pegs tells Anne about how she got pregnant with Gerry when she was in her 40s, she says. “ Well, they always say, as long as you’re in the army, you can always get shot.”  I stole that line from Grandma Aggie, who once said that about a relative who had a “change-of-life baby.”

Later in the novel, Anne, who is Peg’s nurse, asks Peg how she is feeling.  Peg replies, “like a lily dipped in sh*t.”  Need I say, that I stole that one from Grandma Gert?  Peg collects religious artifacts like Grandma Gert and believes butter is it’s own food group.  Like Grandma Aggie, Peg has white cotton candy hair, prays regularly and worries about everyone’s immortal soul without coming off as sanctimonious.

Both of my grandmothers are now dead, but I often wonder what they’d think of my stealing their words and traits for use in St. Anne’s Day.  I’m not quite sure, but in my mind I can hear Grandma Aggie saying “Lord help us, I’m so happy I’m going up for a bust,” and Grandma Gert saying, “Well, I’ll be damned.  That’s me in your book!”

Can you think of a character from a novel that seemed so real that you could almost imagine them stepping off the page into real life?  Who is the most wise-cracking character you can recall from a novel?
