RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens on “Fame: Would You Remember My Name?”

Two years ago, after a two plus month ordeal, 33 trapped men were rescued from a mine in Chile while the world looked on and sympathized with their plight. For a time, these men became famous, the fulcrum of international news. They met with their country’s President and were promised fancy book and movie deals about their ordeal. It seemed like their fate would change. They’d go from gang-ridden neighborhoods to a nice, comfortable home, like those in the US suburbs, where they could raise their families in peace. The reality? Although some donations came through, the future of these men remained far from certain.
Some of the men could have taken other jobs, or offered better opportunities. Yet, there was a dark side to all of this. It appeared some of the water consumed by them, for lack of an alternative, had a metallic taste. This could translate to serious health issues now or in the future. Also, their residency below ground brought on some tensions among the men. While the story was in the news, concrete help from the government was not yet forthcoming. This story was not just a story of solidarity and overcoming odds. It was also a story of extreme adversity, media spin, and the outcome of it was hazy at best. The good thing that came out of it was that all men were saved. Yet, life from there on would be a gamble, especially on the financial and health side.PONDERING A THOUGHT OR TWO:
This type of situation isn’t new. I’m not referring to people being horribly trapped in a mine (which we know has happened before) – but I’m talking about poor, underprivileged people being offered an ace card for a few minutes, only to have it stripped from them at the end. People who got 15 minutes of fame, and that’s all. Many have followed the controversial story of the “Slumdog Millionaire” movie protagonists, the child actors who garnered world fame with well-received performances, only to be sent back soon thereafter to the slums they came from without so much as a by-your-leave.Luckily, some have a bigger break. After being given her fame card through Julia Roberts’ portrayal of her in a blockbuster movie, Erin Brockovich, for instance, got her own show for a while and her book Take It From Me: Life’s a Struggle But You Can Win made it to the NYT bestseller list. The Subway guy, Jared Fogle, wrote a book and is still known for his Subway diet. Many participants on reality TV shows get their dream to be in the limelight fulfilled.

Jon and Kate plus 8The BachelorSurvivor… and the like – these are just a few examples. How long will their fame last and what gifts or curses will it bring them?

This makes me think of books and why we love the underdog characters so much – characters that are strong and resilient, and make it in the end. We all like to read about people who achieved success after a tough time because so often we imagine ourselves in that position and we can truly relate.THE LESSON OF THE HOUR:Sometimes perseverance plays a part in achieving fame, success and recognition. At times, being at the right place at the right time is the main contributor. What is always important, however, is that one has good representation, that is, someone with them who has their interests at heart. The miners in Chile and the actors in Slumdog Millionaire will never improve their lives unless someone—someone important, someone with clout—is willing to go to bat for them and be their voice. A person or institution who’s not there just to draw the news of the hour, make a buck, lift ratings, make a good impression and/or offer empty promises. Some think that fame can come in an instant – this is true, but is it always lasting? Does it bring positive change? Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy or clear-cut.

So my thing is, let yourself be your most ardent representative. I suppose one thing I love about the indie authors I’m surrounded by is that they’ve taken the chance to look out for themselves and to shoulder the responsibility for their little failures and ultimate successes. If you look around you, you’ll see the underdog at work, struggling to get out of a rut and be noticed, even just for a minute. Indie authors do this every day, hoping to touch the readers’ hearts. We are everywhere and you may know a few personally. It could be someone close to you, far from you, or it could even be you. As the sayings go, quite truthfully, there are moments when life’s a bi*ch then shit happens. But it’s all worth it anyway, at least I like to think so because for me it’s absolutely worth the work. And here’s the question of the hour, dear RG2Eland: If you had the opportunity to get your fifteen minutes of fame, how would you like that story to unfold?Until next time…

D. D. Scott’s Wonderfully Witchy World is Here with Book 1 in Her Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches, Series!!!

When I began writing my latest release – PRACTICAL MISCHIEF (Belle Bishop, Queen of Witches, Book 1) – it was because I have a passion for witchcraft. In fact, I’m a witch-in-training.

I wanted to share my magickal journey with a fabulous fictional cast and crew, and thus Belle Bishop and her Wonderfully Witchy World came to life in my notebooks and then on my screen.

On Amazon

B&N Nook

Kobo

As I always do when I first start a new series, I began to play with how I would market these magickal, witchery-filled books. And also as always, I wanted to find a fabulous way to work-in me, myself and I – and my brand – into my promotions.

My D. D. Scott-ville brand, at its heart, is all about sassy humor and LOL fun.

Why?

Because that’s me…that’s who I am.

One of the things I do with my love of sassy humor is collect and share Bitchy Signs in all of my cyber homes (Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest, my personal website D. D. Scott-ville, etc.). So, first I wanted to capture that element but give it a magickal boost. To that end, my Bitchy Signs became Witchy Bitchy Signs, like this little gem:

Along with the LMAO fun though, I’m also all about paying it forward and sharing my love of life, organic food, cocktails, coffee, and quirky crazy ideas and pop culture.

But how could I work my witchery journey and new series into all of that?

And what if the fact that I am a witch-in-training scared the hell outta you?

I work with the magickal energies that are all around us. For example, I pay close attention to the moon and celebrate all of its phases. I use crystals and stones, flowers and herbs, candles and color, tarot cards, the elements of fire, water, air and earth.

What could I do with that aspect of me? And even more important, should I put that out there at all?

Did I have the balls to take a Wonderfully Witchy Risk?!

U betchyer broomsticks I did!!!

***Note: That cow is jumpin’ over the moon in style, my friends…one very savvy bovine.

So, I came out of the broom closet!!! 🙂

I started by creating what I call my D. D. Scott-ville Magickal Mantras, a series of blog posts sharing fabulous magickal tips that y’all can use in your own homes to bring more positive things into your life and banish the not-so-positive. There’s the pay it forward portion of my brand’s promise to all of you wonderful peeps. You can do a lot more than just get the scoop from my D. D. Scott-ville World, you can participate in all of the quirky crazy fun too!

Yes, I’ve taken a huge risk coming out of the broom closet with my witchery journey, but I’m being authentic, fun and sharin’ the love – all things at the heart of who I am.

And guess what?!

Thanks to so many of you A-mazing RG2E Peeps, my D. D. Scott-ville website traffic has tripled and every week now most of the posts that show up as my most influential moments (on Klout ) have to do with my wonderfully witchy adventures! :-)

So, Welcome, RG2E Peeps, to my Wonderfully Witchy World! I can’t wait to hear what you think about Belle Bishop, my Queen of Witches.

For PRACTICAL MISCHIEF…Think The Good Witch meets The Three Stooges and Tinker Hell!

Who all would like an Ebook Gift Copy of PRACTICAL MISCHIEF?! Let me know below, and you just might win one!!!

Stuck with a Stiff is now an Audio Book Too with New Sounds, New Narrators and New Ideas!

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

I’m over the moon to share with you that STUCK WITH A STIFF (The Stuck with a Series, Book One) is now available as an Audio Book!!! And what a unique and exciting listen it is…

Stuck with a Stiff audio

On Audible

On Amazon

Coming to iTunes soon!

In our Indie Epublishing World, it’s all about been there done that, or I think I’ll try this or perhaps that, or nope that one doesn’t seem to be working, or ohhh yeahhh that one is definitely working, or better yet, gosh I love the “sound” of that so okay let’s see how that could work in my multi-media empire.

And, we are building multi-media empires, not just filling cyber shelves with our Ebooks.

Now that we have the opportunity to take our books from Indie Ebooks to Audio Books, we’ve got even more fabulous decisions to make!

iStock_000017949672XSmall

After listening to a variety of Audio Books, I decided what I really liked a lot were those books using both male and female narrators. I have a strong theater background, so maybe it was that instinct that drove me. But whatever the reason, my gut told me to pursue this type of “sound” next.

So, when I posted my next two series for auditions on Audible (we really do get to “audition” narrators to produce our books 🙂 ) – The Cozy Cash Mysteries and The Stuck with a Series, I mentioned I was looking for a male/female duo or even an ensemble-style cast.

Wait till you hear my new narrators…

Jeffrey Kafer will be producing my Stuck with a Series Books.

Professional Award-winning audiobook narrator/producer of 60+ titles spanning thrillers, mysteries, drama, comedy and non-fiction

Jeffrey, along with the very talented female narrator – Karyn O’Bryant – as well, will read this series with Jeffrey doing the chapters from the male point of view (POV) and Karyn taking the chapters in the female POV.

Marshall Davis of Davis Sound, LLC will be recording my Cozy Cash Mysteries.

Professional and affordable studio recording for audio books an voice-overs

Davis Sound is an audio recording business set up to cover a wide and complementary range of services. Within these services is audio recording, editing, and mastering provided in our ProTools based 24-track studio. This audio recording capability is used for music, audio books, book trailers, voice-overs, or other similar applications that can be used for promotion.

Davis Sound also provides information and highlights music of various artists associated with Davis Sound, including links to sites where their music can be purchased and downloaded. In time, more musicians that work with Davis Sound will be added.

What’s really cool about what Marshall and his actors are doing is that they are actually going to act out the books. Meaning, that whenever both of my male and female characters are in a scene, that’s the way they will read them. The male actor takes the male characters and lines, and the female handles all of the female characters and lines.

So, there you have it!

Going from Indie Ebooks to Audio Books means New “Sounds,” New Narrators and New Ideas!!!

Have y’all had the opportunity to listen to audio books with both male and female narrators tag-teaming it?! Tell us below…

Happy Listening!!! :-)

And how ’bout I treat two of you who comment today to the Audio Book version of Stuck with a Stiff?!

The Whys and Hows of Writing Ebook Reviews, Featuring RG2E Author Marina Maddix

Wavin’ atchya, RG2E Peeps!

Please give a big ol’ RG2E Welcome to First-Time Featured Author, Marina Maddix, who’s sharing wonderful tips on Writing Ebook Reviews!

Take it away, Marina…

Let’s face it, writing reviews for the books we read can be downright daunting. Some of us are voracious readers, so keeping up with all the reviews we’re supposed to leave is overwhelming. Others of us have very busy lives, so on our list of priorities, leaving a review falls somewhere between changing the baking soda box in the fridge and cleaning mildew off the cellar walls. Some readers may even be worried about putting their own writing — even in the form of a book review — out there for the world to see.

By posting a positive review to Amazon, you’re leaving a permanent mark of approval for those who might want to read the book after you. It’s called social proof. Reviews also tell us writers when you want to read more about certain characters. I didn’t expect my steamy erotic-romance short story Knight Fall to get much of a response but readers seemed to connect with my heroine, Kelly. A handful left reviews, but many emailed me asking for more of Rick and Kelly’s story. If I’d relied solely on my few reviews, I might not have written the sequel, Vegas Knights, which I released on March 1. (Did you know you can create any pen name you want for your profile, so none of your family and friends will know which books you review?)

If you love a book or a series or a character or an author, you may very well be doing yourself a disservice by not leaving a review letting others, including the author, know you want more. The more good reviews a book has almost always translates into more sales for the author. Increased sales means s/he can write more, which means you can read more. Win-win!

Look at it this way: If there is a tiny specialty grocery store in your hometown that you would hate to see go out of business, you make an effort to shop there occasionally and tell others about it to show your support. Leaving reviews for your favorite authors works the same way.

Now to the nitty gritty. You hate leaving reviews, don’t have the time or don’t know what to say. The key is to speak the truth. If you loved a book, tell us why. Don’t give out spoilers but a few tidbits help us understand if we might like the same things. And they don’t have to be long, detailed book reports, either. Here’s an easy template to start you off that fulfills Amazon’s 20-word requirement but won’t take up much of your time — replace the ALL CAP words (and examples) with your own words:

“I really enjoyed BOOK TITLE because the story made me feel EMOTION (happy, sad, conflicted, reminiscent of my childhood, etc). I especially liked SOMETHING (a character, the storyline, a plot twist, etc — just don’t leave a spoiler!). I think anyone who enjoys GENRE (sci fi, erotic romance, WWII history) books, would enjoy this one.”

If you have a specific criticism of the book, go ahead and include it, such as: “I didn’t care much for SOMETHING (the writing style, a certain character, the ending), but overall I enjoyed the story.”

So what if you hated a book? Personally, I do my best to live by the ‘If you can’t say anything nice…’ rule Mom taught me. But if you feel compelled to leave a negative review, ask yourself a few questions first:

  • Were my expectations realistic? For example, you picked up a freebie months ago and just started reading it. You thought it was chick lit for whatever reason but you’re disappointed to learn it is actually a biography of Otto von Bismarck. As fascinating as the book may be, it’s not what you wanted to read, and you’re irritated. Before leaving an outraged review, pop over to the book’s Amazon page to see if the description and categories accurately depict the content. If so, leaving a negative review because you got mixed up doesn’t help anyone.
  • Was the book poorly written or did I just not like the decisions the characters made? I received a review in which the reader complimented the book up and down but gave me one star because she didn’t agree with a decision a character made at the end. I can understand her feelings but she claimed to enjoy everything else about the book, so did it really deserve one star? There are five stars to choose from — two, three and four stars are perfectly acceptable alternatives. Pick the one that best fits your *overall* feeling about the book.
  • Am I angry/upset/offended by the subject matter? If that’s the case, I would suggest not reading any more books in that genre as it’s just not for you. Leaving a negative review for the Bible because you’re an atheist is downright rude. The same holds true for paranormal erotica, unauthorized biographies or history texts. It’s a great big world out there, full of diversity. If you find yourself hating every book in a particular genre, try a different one.
  • Which brings us to the biggest question: Did I actually read this book? If you didn’t read the book, but rather are just assuming it’s bad because you believe the subject matter to be morally wrong or you think it’s a rip-off of your favorite author or you’re ethically opposed to mining for purple diamonds on Jupiter, please don’t leave a review. Not only is it against Amazon’s Terms of Service, but it’s downright deceitful. Instead, read a book you think you’ll enjoy and use the template above to write a glowing review!

EXCERPT:

They sat entwined under the stars, swaying slightly with the rhythm of their own bodies. Rick’s hands moved slowly from her hair down her back. Shivers of anticipation rippled through Kelly. They were going to make love under the stars. It had always been a fantasy of hers but she’d never imagined it would come true. But a lot of things she’d never imagined were happening lately.

Feeling the need to show him she wasn’t some precious flower that needed tending and special care, that she was an independent woman, Kelly took control. His eyes never left her body as she moved to stand over him, legs spread, hands on her hips.

“Strip.” The single word brought a knowing smirk to Rick’s face. Without a word, and still never taking his eyes from her, he eased his off his jacket, throwing it aside. His gaze was positively smoldering as he loosened his tie and started to pull it over his head.

“Leave it.” Kelly commanded on impulse. His hands paused, then dropped to the front of his charcoal Armani button-down, his eyes burning into her flesh like a brand. His fingers worked slowly, deliberately, intensifying her need for him. But she wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of seeing her impatience. Cocking her hip, she let him tease her with his leisurely pace.

When the shirt was lying atop the leather jacket, he looked up expectantly, awaiting her next instruction. When she nodded toward his pants, triumph flashed across his face. She realized her mistake as he moved to stand. Once on his feet, he would tower over her, emphasizing her vulnerability and his dominance.

“On second thought, scratch that.” One of his eyebrows shot up, and a look of exasperation took the place of triumph. She knew the score and she wasn’t going to give him an advantage if she could help it. He leaned back on his elbows — shirtless and irresistible — and studied her.

She couldn’t afford to make a misstep or show any hesitation. This had become less of a game for her and more of a demand for equality in this relationship. He may be rich, but that didn’t mean he was in control here. Either he accepted that they were in this together, as equal partners, or he would be taught that lesson. Of course, she suspected that would be a lesson he might enjoy learning.

RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on Her Favorite Reader Comment “I Wish It Were Longer…”

Happy Monday, RG2E Peeps!

For an author, nothing beats knowing our readers are really loving our books and want more.

Here’s RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on that very thing…

SJN Author photo

“I wish it were longer…”

As an author, those are words I love to hear. It means the reader wanted more. They loved the book, but didn’t want it to end so they could continue to spend time with their new ‘friends.’ Not to be confused with “The story ended too soon,” which many times means the reader wasn’t satisfied with the way the story ended.

I have a shorter story that has received both these responses. The readers who wish for more usually leave a great review. The ones who say it ended too soon, well…not so much. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and this is not to complain about the readers who expected more. I am sorry if I let them down.

The thing is for me, when I wrote the final sentence for that story, it was done. My characters were on their way to their Happily Ever After (HEA), and there was nothing left to tell. Forcing more wouldn’t have satisfied me, or any of my readers.

Then came my story Beneath Still Waters (Part One), in the Tales From The Mist anthology.

Tales_From_the_Mist_cover - final

An old legend tells of a beautiful witch unjustly persecuted who became a ghost bent on revenge…

The danger lies in not believing.

On a sorority camping trip in the Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park, Becca scoffs at the story of the Ghost of Still Waters, despite the convictions of her fellow campers, Liz and Shane. When Liz challenges her to summon the witch’s spirit, will Becca’s disbelief seal her fate?

Amazon, Amazon UK, BN, ARe, Kobo, SW, Goodreads

I was writing to a word count limit, but the closer I got to 8,000 words, the more antsy I got, because I could feel there was no way the characters’ story would truly be finished to my satisfaction within that limit. But I really wanted to be part of the wonderful collaboration of stories, so I wrapped BSW up, and then decided to write a sequel.

Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two) took me by surprise, too. What I’d expected to be about 15,000 words morphed into 35,000 before the characters stopped ‘talking’ and I could give them the ending they’d earned. And you know what…there’s still the remote possibility that one of the characters from this series will start talking to me in the future.

If she does, there will be a Still Waters (Part Three).

In the meantime I’d love to offer five ebook copies of Tales From The Mist today. Hopefully you’ll WISH Beneath Still Waters was longer and pick up a copy of Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two).

Rising_Above_ebook_cover_1333x2000

Imagine you’ve lived before, but don’t remember or believe it’s even possible. Therein lies the danger. For in not believing and learning from your pasts, the power shifts to the one who would see you dead. Again.

Ryan James never gave much thought to ghosts or the idea of reincarnation—until the appearance of the beautiful Ali Whitman triggers terrifying visions that feel like real life. As he pieces together their past lives, he discovers they aren’t the only players. Worse, if he can’t convince Ali to believe before their past adversary makes the next move, he’ll lose her all over again.

Amazon, BN, Apple, ARe, Kobo, SW

And now, my question for you lovely readers: Do you more often find yourself wishing a story were longer, or thinking it ended too soon?

Let me know in the comments, along with your email address, and I’ll draw 5 winners for a download of the Tales From The Mist ebook.

Thank you for stopping by today!

RG2E Featured Author Tamara Ward on “How to Use Goodreads”

Happy Weekend, RG2E Peeps!

We’ve gotten a few requests to go over the basics of Goodreads, how to use the site. So, here’s the fabulous scoop from RG2E Featured Author Tamara Ward, who is my go-to Goodreads Guru.

Take it away, Tamara…

me standing medium

Goodreads is a site that’s all about readers – readers sharing what books they like and don’t like, readers getting and giving book recommendations. As the site says, “Every once in a while you run into a friend who tells you about this ‘great new book I’m reading.’ And suddenly you’re excited to read it. It’s that kind of excitement that Goodreads is all about.”

So you want to know how to be a part of the excitement. The first step is to read a book… or remember the last book you read. It helps if you really loved the book. Then, log onto Goodreads and find the book by running a search for its title.

Hopefully, the book will come up in your search, you’ll click on it, and you’ll be brought to the book’s page. You’ll see the book cover on the left, beside the title and author, and the book blurb. Beneath the cover, five stars are lined up, just waiting for your click. Select the number of stars you feel the book deserves. Get ready to click on the pop-up balloon that gives you the option of writing a review.

clickhere (1)

On a book’s page, you’ll see your friends’ reviews of that book, and you’ll also see which of your Goodreads friends have marked the book as to-be-read. (This is all on the left hand side of your screen.)

On the right hands side, you’ve got a bunch of interactive features. You can share that you’ve read the book via a variety of social media sites. You can share or view favorite quotes or trivia from the book. Sometimes even a video related to the book is posted, and you can watch that.

If you really loved the book, see if it’s on any lists (also in that right hand column). Check out the list; perhaps you’ll like another book on the list.

I can get lost wandering around Goodreads. In a good way.

“Goodreads users recommend books, compare what they are reading, keep track of what they’ve read and would like to read, find their next favorite book, form book clubs and much more,” the site says.

And it’s true. I’ve enjoyed all these features on Goodreads, and basically, you just dive in and start going for it. That’s my best advice.

Oh yeah, and if you’re looking for a book club, try the WG2E Street Team’s RG2E club at http://www.goodreads.com/group/show/62304-we-read-indie-books-rg2e.

What do you think, RG2E Peeps? Do you have a favorite way to spend your time on Goodreads?

I belong to a book club, or, I used to. My book club fizzled out and I’m not really sure why. Our group was small, our reading tastes similar, and we all loved to read. I think we no longer meet because we couldn’t find a time when all our members could get together.

I miss being in a book club for many reasons. I loved reading books that I would never have picked up on my own. I read books about other cultures, I discovered unknown-to-me authors, and I marveled at the different things people walk away from a book appreciating.

Often, the members of my group were drawn to certain characters and plot points in the books we read. Listening to the members discuss the things they liked and didn’t like was fascinating. As an author, I miss having that research group at my fingertips.

Many authors will admit they read differently since they started writing. I find it much harder to enjoy a book and really lose myself in the story because I’m too busy dissecting the plot, looking for the hook, anticipating the climax, and thinking of ways I would have written the book differently. I know I’ve discovered a truly gifted author when I no longer look for these things and just get caught up in the story.

So what about you, RG2E? Are you in a book club? If so, what do you appreciate most about the experience?

I’ll be giving away my romantic women’s fiction title, Angle of Incidence, today at RG2E.

Here’s a short synopsis:

Gwen Perry has the picture perfect life. Her Washington D.C. based photography business is booming, her husband’s law career is lucrative, and after years of trying, they’re only months away from the birth of their first child.

While a nasty turn of fate leaves Gwen devastated, angry, and on the verge of depression, her husband Rob walks a dangerous tight rope. He’s hiding something from Gwen that could destroy their marriage. But even the deepest secrets won’t stay buried forever.

When Rob’s past is revealed, Gwen agrees to join her college friend at the artists’ retreat he’s leading in Colorado despite the consequences to her marriage. But Rob’s not the only one keeping secrets from the past and her trip down memory lane could burn the bridge leading her back home.
