RG2E Guest Author Cate Dean Takes Us on a Journey of a Book Cover

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

Welcome to The RG2E and/or Welcome Back!

Today, we’re all going on a superfab adventure with RG2E Guest Author Cate Dean, who’s taking us on a Journey of a Book Cover.

Take it away, Cate…

As an independent author, I am in charge of every aspect of publishing my books. And that includes my book covers.

I spend a good amount of time with my cover artist to get the image just right. Have you ever wanted to know what goes into a book cover? Here is the journey of the cover for Last Chance Jack, from first sketch to final product.

The story is about a guardian angel, with a twist. I didn’t want a paranormal angel, or an angel that looked too – heavenly. So when I wrote up my first description and sent it off to my artist, here was the result:

A nice start, but I wanted something a bit more – something. Yep, my artist thought exactly the same thing. 🙂 But after a few back and forth emails, she came up with this:

A much closer fit, but still a bit too contemporary. So, back again, this time with several versions of what would be the final (she always gives me multiple options, which I love, and hate):

Guess which one I chose? I won’t keep you in suspense – here is the final cover:

We took a couple elements from the multiple samples, and ended up with this version. I love it, and it really fits the story – which ain’t your usual guardian angel story.

I hope you enjoyed taking this little journey with me. I love collaborating on every book cover, and having the final say about what will finally represent my book. One of the many perks of calling all the shots. 🙂

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time – read on.

Author Bio:
Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper. She grew up losing herself in the wilds of fantasy worlds, and has had some of her own adventures while tromping through the UK, and a few other parts of the world. A lover of all things supernatural, she infuses that love into her stories, giving them a unique edge. When she’s not writing, she loves cooking, scaring herself silly in the local cemeteries, and reading pretty much anything she can get her hands on.

It’s Jimmy Thomas Friday on RG2E…as in International Cover Model King Jimmy Thomas!!!

Happy Friday, All!!!

Today’s RG2E EOTD Post is all about going “Under The Covers – As In Book Covers”!

And there isn’t a hotter guy on book shelves and cyber shelves the world over than international cover model Jimmy Thomas, the man who’s now the hero on 2500 covers…which beats both Fabio and the former Cover King John DeSalvo…

2500 covers, which includes being the oh-so-hot bootscootin’ cowboy on my debut release…BOOTSCOOTIN’ BLAHNIKS!

Drool ’til your heart’s content! Jimmy’s just that drool-worthy.

For more fabulous images of Jimmy and to learn more about his fascinating careers, visit his websites at:

I’m beyond thrilled I got Jimmy to do my debut cover shot! And I’m super-excited to have partnered with him again for the second book in my Bootscootin’ Series – STOMPIN’ ON STETSONS.

I’ve also had the privilege of meeting Jimmy and partnering with him again in a two-part “Under The Covers” Interview.

Not that kind of “under the covers” either, Y’All…I know where your minds are goin’…LOL!!!

We’re going to start with this Part I peek at one of Jimmy’s cover shoots which I was lucky enough to attend at RT10 (http://www.rtbookreviews.com/convention-home) in April 2010 in Columbus OH.

Part II will be my amazing interview with Jimmy where he’ll expand on some of the topics I cover today as well as give you the inside scoop on all-things-Jimmy including what makes this sexy, sassy, smart guy tick and what his future plans look like!

So let’s jump right in…Under The Covers…Let’s find out what happens at a Live, Book-Cover Shoot!

Here we go:

1. Jimmy chooses the gorgeous models he partners with for each shoot based on their personalities. These women must be fun and have chemistry with Jimmy. He also tries to use local models from the locations he’s shooting in.

2. For Jimmy’s photographers, lighting is the most important factor of the shoot. The lighting can set the mood or break it and keeps the image from appearing flat.

3. Jimmy and his models never force the poses. These covers aren’t posed shots. Rather they are scenes Jimmy and his partner(s) act out in front of the camera. They keep the seduction and mood going by taking each shoot from a sweet romance to full erotic heat level.

***Note: This sweet to erotic heat element was the most intriguing point I learned at the live cover shoot. I had no idea that’s how it was done. That way, Jimmy explained, his shoot can be used no matter what a book’s heat level. Brilliant!!!

4. Jimmy thinks the “Almost Kiss” is the hottest shot. Like he says, “If you see the kiss, you know the end of the story.”

5. He goes for that push-pull factor with each shot to keep the sexual tension high and visible.

6. He works with plus-size models too.

7. He loves doing action-style shots involving “running” away or toward danger.

8. He gave us this fun and fabulous inside-a-shoot tidbit: for Playboy shoots, they use one light designated for each body part – i.e. a light focused on the shoulder, the arm, the neck, etc.

9. For every couple hundred shots taken, he may get 30 “keepers”.

10. They use very little make-up to avoid dating a shot. No added eyelashes either.

11. Jimmy bought a special bed for bedroom shots and hangs sheers and uses a variety of satin sheets for different effects.

12. Photographers often stand on the bed to get better shots. (Side note: Sooo much for the romance…LOL!)

13. The sheet colors used actually change the hair color. Hair is a huge factor in the shots, moving it just the right way with the strands right where you want ’em.

14. They often use Canon or Nikon cameras.

How’s that for some great Under The Cover – As In Book Cover tidbits?! Fun stuff!!!

Jimmy is also a super sweet, sexy smart guy underneath all that muscle. Who knew they made ’em like that?!

Coming soon, I’ll post Part II of this Under The Covers segment, and you’ll hear from Jimmy himself as he answers my interview questions.
