Stuck with a Stiff is now an Audio Book Too with New Sounds, New Narrators and New Ideas!

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

I’m over the moon to share with you that STUCK WITH A STIFF (The Stuck with a Series, Book One) is now available as an Audio Book!!! And what a unique and exciting listen it is…

Stuck with a Stiff audio

On Audible

On Amazon

Coming to iTunes soon!

In our Indie Epublishing World, it’s all about been there done that, or I think I’ll try this or perhaps that, or nope that one doesn’t seem to be working, or ohhh yeahhh that one is definitely working, or better yet, gosh I love the “sound” of that so okay let’s see how that could work in my multi-media empire.

And, we are building multi-media empires, not just filling cyber shelves with our Ebooks.

Now that we have the opportunity to take our books from Indie Ebooks to Audio Books, we’ve got even more fabulous decisions to make!

iStock_000017949672XSmall

After listening to a variety of Audio Books, I decided what I really liked a lot were those books using both male and female narrators. I have a strong theater background, so maybe it was that instinct that drove me. But whatever the reason, my gut told me to pursue this type of “sound” next.

So, when I posted my next two series for auditions on Audible (we really do get to “audition” narrators to produce our books 🙂 ) – The Cozy Cash Mysteries and The Stuck with a Series, I mentioned I was looking for a male/female duo or even an ensemble-style cast.

Wait till you hear my new narrators…

Jeffrey Kafer will be producing my Stuck with a Series Books.

Professional Award-winning audiobook narrator/producer of 60+ titles spanning thrillers, mysteries, drama, comedy and non-fiction

Jeffrey, along with the very talented female narrator – Karyn O’Bryant – as well, will read this series with Jeffrey doing the chapters from the male point of view (POV) and Karyn taking the chapters in the female POV.

Marshall Davis of Davis Sound, LLC will be recording my Cozy Cash Mysteries.

Professional and affordable studio recording for audio books an voice-overs

Davis Sound is an audio recording business set up to cover a wide and complementary range of services. Within these services is audio recording, editing, and mastering provided in our ProTools based 24-track studio. This audio recording capability is used for music, audio books, book trailers, voice-overs, or other similar applications that can be used for promotion.

Davis Sound also provides information and highlights music of various artists associated with Davis Sound, including links to sites where their music can be purchased and downloaded. In time, more musicians that work with Davis Sound will be added.

What’s really cool about what Marshall and his actors are doing is that they are actually going to act out the books. Meaning, that whenever both of my male and female characters are in a scene, that’s the way they will read them. The male actor takes the male characters and lines, and the female handles all of the female characters and lines.

So, there you have it!

Going from Indie Ebooks to Audio Books means New “Sounds,” New Narrators and New Ideas!!!

Have y’all had the opportunity to listen to audio books with both male and female narrators tag-teaming it?! Tell us below…

Happy Listening!!! :-)

And how ’bout I treat two of you who comment today to the Audio Book version of Stuck with a Stiff?!

My post today may seem aimed at writers only, but it applies to anyone who wants to achieve something amazing. Let me explain.

I love baseball. I also love to juxtapose incongruent elements to explain something. Why? Because it’s a challenge I guess, and I’m all about challenges. Writing and baseball. You may think those two don’t have much in common, but bear with me.

In baseball, one thing every player must learn is how to hit a curve ball. The curve ball, sometimes called a Bender, sometimes a Hook, is dreaded by batters – even those who are power hitters. Even though it’s slower than a fastball, it fools batters into swinging too soon thus earning them a strike rather than a hit.

So how do baseball players overcome this curse. They learn that the first thing they must do is keep their eyes on the ball. That way they don’t have to guess what the pitcher is going to throw at them. They see and recognize what the pitcher is going to throw as soon as the ball leaves his hand.

Every pitch has a “release point.” If the pitcher’s fingers are over the front of the ball, he’s throwing a change-up. I his hand is directly behind the ball, he’s throwing a fastball. If his fingers are to the side, you better believe he’s pitching you a curve ball.

Batters have to recognize what’s coming at them and what action to take.

What’s This Got To Do With Writing and Life?

Life is all about curve balls. No one gets a pass on life’s curve balls. Writing has its share of curve balls too. Writers get tossed curve balls all the time. They need to have a plan of action ready when this happens. This usually means they need to have a backup plan or a set of steps they’ll take when the curve balls come their way.

Some writers never see the curve ball until it’s whistling by them at warp speed. These are the ones that usually “swing too early” and strike out.

Curve ball: a bad review. The writer swings too early by responding emotionally to the review by making a comment back. Strike!

Curve ball: writing goals based upon best-case scenario for everything falling into its proper place are set. The writer has a family crisis or gets sick and can’t keep the no-room-for error goals so the writing schedule falls by the wayside and the writer loses his/her way. Strike!

Curve ball: sales decline. The writer loses faith and wonders why she’s spending all her time in an endeavor with so few rewards. Strike!

What To Do About Those Pesky Curve Balls

Batters have an easier time at recognizing what’s coming at them and what action to take. In writing, it’s practically impossible to recognize a curve ball heading toward you until it arrives.

The more important action to take is to plan for the curve balls – in advance. Think about all the things that can happen and figure out how to deal with them before they happen.

Bad reviews? Hey, get real. Every writer gets bad reviews. Just check out the book pages for some of the most popular authors around. If your writer’s ego is so weak that bad reviews destroy you, then work on that. Now. Not when your book gets slammed.

Unrealistic writing goals? Again, don’t write goals that aren’t achievable. I don’t know anyone who can plan on feeling great every day or on their kids staying healthy through cold and flu season or any of the other life events that disrupt our writing.

Declining sales? Retail is cyclical. Book sales are retail. There will be ups and downs. Don’t agonize. Don’t waste time and energy in trying to figure out why your sales are down. Use your time and energy to write another book.

Remember

As in baseball, try to remember that you may get fooled by a wild pitch, but if you have an advance plan, and you keep your head, you’ll come out okay.

RG2E Featured Author Laina Turner talks Mistletoe and Holiday Traditions

Happy Weekend, RG2E Peeps! We made it to another one!!!

And wow are we getting close to Santa’s Big Day!

So, let’s talk Holiday Traditions and Mistletoe with RG2E Featured Author Laina Turner…

molaski-0017

Mistletoe

I hear that word and immediately think of greenery hanging up in a doorway at Christmas time for people to kiss under. I was curious as to when and how that tradition started so went on a search to find out more about this plant and boy was I surprised. Did you know that mistletoe has been considered a pest, as it is a parasite shrub that kills trees, by attaching to a host plant and sucking out its nutrients, and destroys natural habitats? I read that and thought it made sense to have that plant as the kissing plant since love does sometime suck all the life out of us but that’s a topic for a different day. I continued my research to further find it has recently been considered a keystone ecological plant on which other species need to survive.

On a more interesting note the tradition of kissing under the mistletoe dates back to the early 1800’s and is thought to be of Scandinavian decent. Whatever its place in our ecosystem it is a nice tradition that many people can have fun with.

What is your favorite holiday tradition?

With that thought I leave you to comment and receive a copy of Mistletoe & Murder for the reader of your choice. In addition, one lucky winner will also receive a copy of the audio book from either iTunes or Audible.

RG2E Featured Author Elaine Raco Chase talks Audio Books!

Wavin’ atchya, RG2E Peeps!

Please give a big ol’ RG2E Welcome to Elaine Raco Chase who’s here today to talk about her fabulous, bestselling Audio Books!!!

Take it away, Elaine…

Hi everyone!  Thanks again DD Scott for letting me have so much fun with these RG2E postings!

Today I am here with audio books!  Love them! When I was first print-published, I eagerly agreed for all my romance and mystery novels to be part of Lighthouse for the Blind audio cassettes with matching Braille books.

But how things have changed!  Now audio books – in so many formats – are the hottest thing going.  And I read about it first on DD’s main blog – so a big wave and thank you DD!

I’ve introduced quite a few author friends to audio books and the group I’m using ACX.com – which is part of Amazon.  But take heart – the audio books go to: iTunes and audible.com – so everyone can ‘hear’ your words.

“Hearing your words”…sometimes that can strike fear into an author’s heart.  I think all of us struggle to find the right words that define our characters and can mentally hear the intonation of those words as we write them.  But what happens when someone elses voice says your words? That’s actually the hardest part of creating an audio book – finding the right narrator.  A person whose voice and tonations can make my book, my story, my characters come alive to a reader.

I found Sheila Book just when she joined ACX as a narrator – she did my first audio book Video Vixen and you can hear her ‘purr naughty’ whenever she becomes soap-opera siren Vixen Mallory.

Then I asked …well okay, begged, her to consider Designing Woman. I could just hear her as Brandy Abbott – one minute the consummate architect, the next the consummate sexpot who drives poor Griffen St. Claire into more than distraction.  Luckily Sheila agreed and wow the reviews have been fantastic:

“Great dialogue – And it ALL sounds like a conversation you could overhear at any time, in many situations. That technique alone makes the book a worthwhile read – that it is combined and integrated into a tightly written, fast paced and sexy story makes this worth every one of the 5 stars.

The audio book was narrated beautifully, with words clear and pacing easy to follow. I tend to listen at 2.5 speed, I talk fast too, but It wasn’t too fast to follow the story.

Whether you are looking for a break from television, or don’t mind the other commuters staring at you as you laugh, often, the audiobook is well worth the investment.”

Sheila is now working Calculated Risk .

After listening to at least 50 narrators, I found Janina Edwards who narrated One Way or Another –it was one of Audible.com’s “Best Reviewed Romances Novels of October.”

One reviewer wrote: “It was enjoyable to listen to. The narrator, Janina, did an excellent job. She has a great voice and just became all of the characters. You know the narration is done well when it sort of fades into the background and all you hear is the story.”

Rules of the Game just hit audible.com and iTunes narrated by Rachel Logan. Rachel has a wonderful voice and, like Janina, you just get trapped into the erotic romantic comedy.  It does have a warning label on it!

I worked in radio and television for many years – I even did voice over’s (VO) for I Dream of Jeannie and Wild Kingdom as well as a few sports shows (I know I’ve dated myself but that was me saying: “and next week….” Or “please stay tuned…”) and I did some fantastic radio plays as well.

I had wondered if audio books could be done like a radio play – with opening music, sound effects, dual voices (or even more than two) and I was thrilled to discover Bella Czar Productions shared my thoughts.  Award-winning narrators Destiny Landon and Lee James not only became a cast of 100’s at times but also wrote original music for each chapter and added sound effects, when appropriate, for both Special Delivery and Dare the Devil.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea – but it sure is mine. And one reviewer wrote such a detailed review I am framing it:

Where does Dare the Devil rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Good question. The difference between this audio book and others is the overall production is spectacular – which typically is accomplished through bigger budgets of course and stellar talent. It is read by duo narrators whom are exceptionally gifted with the ability to “become” the characters they portrayed. I would call them talented actors rather than narrators. There was a great amount of back and forth dialogue from a great amount of characters that really filled out the stories big picture and was really well done.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dare the Devil? The helicopter scene was exciting.

Any additional comments?

This was a great story that was truly different from your generic romance. It was quite original, and really fun to listen too. I loved Cam’s grandmothers who tricked Devlin. Lots of funny parts, real (and hot) romance in a difficult industry and time. Strong characters that were believable and ethical. Just a great listen.

Bella Czar’s Destiny and Lee also did Special Delivery – just two people in the entire book – it’s been on the top of the erotic romance audio bestseller’s list since it was posted and it’s got great reviews!

What about Destiny Landon and Lee James ’s performance did you like?

I love Destiny Landons voice!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She totally took the character of Roxanne and made it her own. She “IS” Roxanne! Lee was a perfect romantic counterpart, angling her combative nature with the right playfulness in his tone that the writer expertly devised in their dialogue.

Any additional comments?

This is a must “listen” to all you fellow listeners who really enjoy well executed, combative foreplay and well written/descriptive literature.

Destiny and Lee are hard at work on Double Occupancy – which may make even me squirm – it’s been on FB’s Top 50 Books to read after 50 Shades of Grey for 20 weeks (11/15) – oh, my…and they are going to do my newest ebook: Caught in a Trap as well as my mystery series!

I hope you’ll sample all my audio books – they are attached to the ebook on Amazon, in iTunes and at audible.com…and there are so many other great audio books to choose from…did I say “audio books make great gifts!”

And speaking of gifts – I have 15 audio books to give a way today – you’ll be able to choose your download off of audible.com – nothing to join, you’ll get a gift code. The only choice – is the heat level!

Many of you know that I host The Author’s Corner every Thursday nite at 8PM eastern time, on www.trianglevarietyradio.com – internet radio. DD will be joining me and a few other authors and narrators on December 13th – when we talk audio books…hope you’ll listen in!

About Elaine:

What a great time to be a writer! I am thrilled to be able to update, enhance, extend my bestselling print romantic comedies.  Connecting with fans and other writers has been fantastic all courtesy of Facebook/twitter. My romantic comedies are available on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Kobo, Smashwords, AllRomance, Itunes – everyplace!

I also host The Author’s Corner every Thursday nite, 8PM EDT on trianglevarietyradio.com – blog talk radio.  I feature authors and their books along with marketing experts for writers; reading experts for parents; and bullying help for everyone!  There’s always something fun on the show – so I hope you’ll listen in!

What am I up to?  So excited about Double Occupancy it’s been on Facebooks’ Top 50 Books to read after 50 Shades of Grey list for 15 weeks!  No bdsm – just an erotic romantic comedy, with adult characters who share a Mexican villa.

Can’t wait for Dare the Devil to hit on audible.com! The award-winning duo of Destiny Landon and Lee James, plus original music, sound effects have turned this erotic western into a movie sound track.  Destiny and Lee did Special Delivery and it’s been on audible.com’s erotic romance bestseller’s list since it came out.  Also Sheila Book purr’s naughty in your ear as the narrator for both Video Vixen andDesigning Woman. Janina Edwards is just fabulous, as she recreates One Way or Another in audio. In fact – if you’ve read this far and put One Way in your response, you might just get one audio book for free!

I currently am working on another erotic romantic comedy – Caught in a Trap!  Then I will be updating my award-winning mystery series featuring Roman Cantrell and Nikki Holden.

RG2E Featured Author Emma Calin tells us about The UK’s National Short Story Week

Happy Tuesday, RG2E Peeps!

Did y’all know it’s National Short Story Week in The UK?! Here’s RG2E Featured Author Emma Calin to share the scoop…

Hi DD – great to be back here on RG2E.

This week is National Short Story Week in the UK so it seems appropriate to offer my prize winning short story Sub-Prime to your readers. The short story has always been my true milieu dating from my childhood listening to 15 minute radio tales. Now that we have the facilities to provide a free audio track with the text, I am able to go back to the true roots of fiction which is of course the spoken story. Rather like poetry, there are constant proclamations of the rebirth of the short. I believe that with attention spans withered in busy lives, the short story is the ristretto fix for folk on the run.

This story has a chequered and controversial history.  Originally written as ‘A Gift at Christmas’, it was for a competition run by a national newspaper group.  Although it won, they would not publish it because they were worried it would distress readers who preferred not to know about life behind the scenes in a turkey farm.  They were also concerned about the reaction of advertisers.  So I got the money and the free dinner – which was not turkey!

The story does not actually focus on the turkeys – but is about exploitation and human trafficking. At the time of writing, there was little public awareness of this issue in the UK. Since then a few infamous examples have made it to the main media.

It is a plainly written real-life story which has brought me sales and critical success.  It is not specifically a Christmas story and I was worried this would limit its shelf life, so I re-named it Sub-Prime since this relates to a central theme. Having said that, in our current economic climate and with the holiday season getting into full swing, this story is more relevant than ever.

The Kindle version of this book comes with a free audio track which is downloaded as an MP3 file.

I hope you get something out of story – whether you read, or listen to it.

Price: 99c (USA) 77p (UK) – Kindle format (including link to free MP3 audio file)

Book Blurb: SUB-PRIME by Emma Calin

A #1 Kindle Best Seller in Short Stories

Two powerless beings are swept together in a transient struggle for survival.
Could the human spirit transcend the brutality and indifference of their brief
experience before they are once again swept helplessly apart?
Far more than a love story – this is a story about love.

Sub-Prime: a short story of our times.

Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars ‘a slaughter of love,’

R Stephen Woodfin

Emma Calin’s Sub-Prime is a haunting short story about the compromises people make for even an uncertain love. Calin takes a grotesque setting and mines beautiful diamonds from it. I would love to see Calin apply her formidable literary gifts to a full length novel that uses this story as its centerpiece.

It only takes twenty minutes or so to read the entire piece. I guarantee the reader will find the time spent on this story well-worth the effort.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars ‘ Top of the Line’

Christina Carson

Good short stories are some of the best reads there are, and Sub-Prime is an excellent example. Calin sets the mood and scene in such desperation and bleakness that you wonder how you’ll get through it, until a momentary charity from a young foreign woman toward an out-of-work husband and father desperate to feed his family sets a new tenor. Being the writer she is, Calin masterfully holds onto both reins that guide the story, the reader never being allowed to forget the brutality of life for these people, while at the same time nurturing the spark of kindness and respect that arises and lifts them momentarily beyond the endless muck of life. A nameless woman and a man called Mike are two characters you won’t soon forget, the mark of a truly fine short story.

5 out of 5 stars ‘A dark tale of Christmas,’

Jack Durish

It’s been a long time since I found a short story worthy of mention. That’s sad. I always loved them. O’Henry. L’Amour. Thurber. There were so many greats who used the medium so well. Emma Calin joins those illustrious ranks with Sub-Prime. She also obligates herself to us now to provide a collection of them. Sub-Prime is a Christmas story that that could become a classic of its genre. It tells the sad tale of a man at the end of his rope, out of work and out of money, trying to provide for his family during the holiday season. There is little hope in this story which is somehow appropriate in these dark economic times in which we live.

5.0 out of 5 stars

Bert Carson

Emma Calin is one of the finest authors plying the ancient trade. I make that statement for three reasons: First, because she has been there. Second, because she is willing to share what she has seen, heard, and learned. Third, because she is an amazing wordsmith.
Writing without experience is akin to walking into total darkness without a light. Sub-Prime is not a fun tale, but it’s truth, and truth, even well stated, is stark, in-your-face, and eye opening. If you have the courage to read Sub-Prime you are going to experience truth told with an eloquence that is difficult to find today.

5 out of 5 stars

By ‘Reader’

This story hooked me in from the very start. It’s set in the real world, not a prettified one, and the writing is excellent. Though the character is in a harsh setting, he’s not hopeless or beat-down. He can still love, he can still feel everything intensely, and he was absolutely fascinating. If you’ve ever been forced to do a job you don’t want to do because you have to feed your family (or even if you haven’t!), you’ll like this story.

The setting was almost surreal in its intensity, and seemed real enough to touch. Loved it. I’ll definitely be looking for more from this author.
