RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens on “Fame: Would You Remember My Name?”

Two years ago, after a two plus month ordeal, 33 trapped men were rescued from a mine in Chile while the world looked on and sympathized with their plight. For a time, these men became famous, the fulcrum of international news. They met with their country’s President and were promised fancy book and movie deals about their ordeal. It seemed like their fate would change. They’d go from gang-ridden neighborhoods to a nice, comfortable home, like those in the US suburbs, where they could raise their families in peace. The reality? Although some donations came through, the future of these men remained far from certain.
Some of the men could have taken other jobs, or offered better opportunities. Yet, there was a dark side to all of this. It appeared some of the water consumed by them, for lack of an alternative, had a metallic taste. This could translate to serious health issues now or in the future. Also, their residency below ground brought on some tensions among the men. While the story was in the news, concrete help from the government was not yet forthcoming. This story was not just a story of solidarity and overcoming odds. It was also a story of extreme adversity, media spin, and the outcome of it was hazy at best. The good thing that came out of it was that all men were saved. Yet, life from there on would be a gamble, especially on the financial and health side.PONDERING A THOUGHT OR TWO:
This type of situation isn’t new. I’m not referring to people being horribly trapped in a mine (which we know has happened before) – but I’m talking about poor, underprivileged people being offered an ace card for a few minutes, only to have it stripped from them at the end. People who got 15 minutes of fame, and that’s all. Many have followed the controversial story of the “Slumdog Millionaire” movie protagonists, the child actors who garnered world fame with well-received performances, only to be sent back soon thereafter to the slums they came from without so much as a by-your-leave.Luckily, some have a bigger break. After being given her fame card through Julia Roberts’ portrayal of her in a blockbuster movie, Erin Brockovich, for instance, got her own show for a while and her book Take It From Me: Life’s a Struggle But You Can Win made it to the NYT bestseller list. The Subway guy, Jared Fogle, wrote a book and is still known for his Subway diet. Many participants on reality TV shows get their dream to be in the limelight fulfilled.

Jon and Kate plus 8The BachelorSurvivor… and the like – these are just a few examples. How long will their fame last and what gifts or curses will it bring them?

This makes me think of books and why we love the underdog characters so much – characters that are strong and resilient, and make it in the end. We all like to read about people who achieved success after a tough time because so often we imagine ourselves in that position and we can truly relate.THE LESSON OF THE HOUR:Sometimes perseverance plays a part in achieving fame, success and recognition. At times, being at the right place at the right time is the main contributor. What is always important, however, is that one has good representation, that is, someone with them who has their interests at heart. The miners in Chile and the actors in Slumdog Millionaire will never improve their lives unless someone—someone important, someone with clout—is willing to go to bat for them and be their voice. A person or institution who’s not there just to draw the news of the hour, make a buck, lift ratings, make a good impression and/or offer empty promises. Some think that fame can come in an instant – this is true, but is it always lasting? Does it bring positive change? Unfortunately, it’s not always that easy or clear-cut.

So my thing is, let yourself be your most ardent representative. I suppose one thing I love about the indie authors I’m surrounded by is that they’ve taken the chance to look out for themselves and to shoulder the responsibility for their little failures and ultimate successes. If you look around you, you’ll see the underdog at work, struggling to get out of a rut and be noticed, even just for a minute. Indie authors do this every day, hoping to touch the readers’ hearts. We are everywhere and you may know a few personally. It could be someone close to you, far from you, or it could even be you. As the sayings go, quite truthfully, there are moments when life’s a bi*ch then shit happens. But it’s all worth it anyway, at least I like to think so because for me it’s absolutely worth the work. And here’s the question of the hour, dear RG2Eland: If you had the opportunity to get your fifteen minutes of fame, how would you like that story to unfold?Until next time…

Happy Valentine’s Day, RG2E Peeps! Think Roses…Not Just in a Vase Either, According to Featured Author Natalie Owens

Happy Valentine’s Day, RG2E Peeps!

We’ll be seeing a ton of roses today, right?! But what about AN ETERNITY OF ROSES?

Here’s RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens to tell you about that as well as her TV/Telly Inspiration…

Nat Author pic 4 FB 2

I happen to be a big fan of the Highlander series since it first came out–to this very day. Sigh. I simply love Adrian Paul in his role of tortured hero fighting for justice and survival. Who can resist a character like that? Tall, dark, handsome–a true warrior fighting for all that is good. And then there was the love he has for this one woman, of course; a woman he protects with all of his might. A woman he eventually loses. So sad! I wanted that series to go on and on, and I’ll still watch reruns when given the opportunity. Since then, I’ve had the pleasure of watching many other wonderful series that impressed me and inspired me in different ways.

So one day, I got to thinking about book series and how readers love them (including me), just like they love to watch TV shows like CSI, Supernatural or True Blood. In literature, there are some amazing series available in the paranormal/fantasy romance genre (e.g., Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward). The germ of an idea was forming in my head and I tried to think whether it had been explored before. Yet I couldn’t find anything just like it that featured immortals dating back to East Indian mythology and existing under their own legal and political system. Immortals with their own style of government and their own code of ethics formed over time. Basically, a secret society of these special individuals that aims at furthering the interests of its people and the humans they live with. This was good, because that idea got stronger and stronger, and started begging me to write it. Many tropes in TV series are age old “templates” that have been adapted and twisted over and over, given fresh life and perspectives. Books are not much different.

So I opened a Word file and jotted down notes. Anything I could think of–the Valthrean hierarchy, their origin, their adventures, their lives, the historical periods they had a hand in shaping, the mindset they would have, and the kind of man or woman they would love as their soul mate. The historical and political aspects to explore fascinated me. For instance, what if Man had someone—or something—powerful and magical come to the rescue at certain crucial points in history? Like a superhuman CIA or covert organization that gets in gear when needed. Such an organization could influence things like the outcome of wars or important social change. With such power, however, comes greed and abuse. Therefore, for every act of good, the shadow of evil lurks not far behind. So, what if Man’s fate and future is determined by warring factions of these immortal beings (good vs. evil)?

The idea in my mind became an outline on paper, and together with my interest in myth, romance and adventure, the Valthreans were born. Gradually, these characters became my best friends–as real to me as any flesh and blood human. It all sounded like a TV show going on in my head!

The story and practices of the Valthreans constitute the backdrop of each book in the series, the glue that holds them together. Some pretty amazing characters make up the higher ranks of this unusual organization—unforgettable heroes and kick-ass heroines such as Emma, Adam, Max, Cam, Neil, Viviane, Nathan, Jack, Pandora, and more. I am having a lot of fun becoming very close friends with each of them. I look forward to spending time with them as I do with the characters of a favorite TV show.

I am very curious about how people relate to books. TV episodes are short, but a series can go on a long time. Books, on the other hand can take longer to read but often (with some exceptions) a book series is much shorter than a TV series.

Speaking of reading, now it’s your turn RG2E-land, do you ever imagine books as TV series? What stays more in your heart – a TV character or a book character?

Thank you for reading!

‘Til the end of my life, I shall belong to you as your husband.”

That was the promise Adrian made to Emmaline. And then, he was gone forever…

It is 1807. Adrian Segrave, Viscount Bournemouthe, and Lady Emmaline Deramore are about to wed and British Society teems with excitement at this imminent love match. But Madeleine de Brandeville, a mysterious Frenchwoman, has her lustful and ambitious sights on the groom. When she sets her cruel plan in motion, she leaves devastation in her path.

Heartbroken, Emmaline embarks on an adventure she’d never imagined having. As the world changes and chaos brews, her fate becomes linked with the Valthreans, a group of immortals who must learn to face a deadly enemy that threatens their place in the human world. But all the while, there is one thing she wants more than any other—to get back her man.

When she finally finds her prize and the intense blue flame of desire burns once more, her worst nightmares are far from over and the toughest battle is yet to begin. Will love win the war in the end?

Praise for An Eternity of Roses:

“A fast-paced … lovable romp” — Mallory Heart Reviews, GMTA Literary Community.

“This book wrapped its arms around me and didn’t let go.”

“A wonderfully paced and exciting romance.”

“The story is tautly engrossing, the plot beautifully constructed, and the characters humanly complex. This paranormal romance is a must read!”

“This book takes the traditional fairy tale and spices it up with intrigue and secret societies.”

Excerpt:

“Don’t ever leave me again,” she said, blinking back tears.

Like I left you once before. “Never, I swear on my father’s grave.” Could he ever erase his foolish past actions that could have destroyed both their lives? “I want to see you carefree and happy.” The way you fill me with joy and excitement each day.

He was here, in her arms, as close as a man’s and woman’s souls could be, joined, linked. One.

“Oh, but I am! Can you not see? I never thought you to be blind,” she made light.

He ran a finger over her dimple. “I assure you I am not blind,” he rasped. His hungry eyes traveled over her face to her neck and exposed shoulders. “I’m not blind at all.”

“Show me, then,” she invited, and brought her seductive lips to his. “Show me how much you can see.”

He caught her head between his hands and kissed her, demanded that she part her lips and allow him to explore the moist inside. Reward came when she threw her head back in abandon, and lured him with soft whimpers of pleasure. He pressed forward until Emma’s back was plastered to the wall.

If only he could keep her that way always. But no. He loved her free spirit too much.

Yet, he also loved her this way. His prisoner. Trapped between a wall and him. All of her possessed by him.

Her palms dug into the snug fabric that covered his shoulders and trailed a burning path down his back. The tips of her fingers dug into the superfine fabric as she frantically pushed her body against his. She clutched on to him with her mouth, her tongue, her kiss, her whole being.

With one hand, he traced the goose bumps on her upper arms, the delicate curve of her waist, and the full contours of her hips and bottom. After a thorough exploration, he retraced his steps and slid his hand up to her breasts, wishing all the time he could make her corset and stays disappear with just the power of his thoughts.

He imagined a scene like this when Emma would forgo such fripperies so he could touch her the way he wanted…

His hand closed over a breast and kneaded. Driven by impulse, his lips left hers and found the exposed skin above her plunging neckline and tasted its sweetness.

Her sigh ended in a whimper, a wanton sound that turned him rock hard.

“Yes, touch me like that, oh please, touch me.”

Her words drove him insane, and for one wild moment he considered laying her down, ripping off her dress and taking her there, on the marble floor.

He groaned and kissed her again, deeply. Primal need pulled at its weakened chains. He wanted to swallow her whole, to become one flesh with her. His body screamed for it. But not here.

With a heart full of regret, he forced himself to stop kissing her … but he couldn’t stop touching her. He pressed his lips briefly to the side of her swollen mouth and let them trail downward.

“Mine,” he murmured into her neck. Her warm breath brushed his temple when he pulled back a little so he could dive in the deep pools of her doe eyes. They were glossed over.

“I love you, Emma,” he rasped.

She rested her head on his chest. “And I adore you. I cannot imagine my life without you.”

If he closed his ears to the clamor from the ballroom, he fancied he could hear the steady rhythm of her heart. He caught a stray tendril of her hair and twisted it around his finger.

She finally lifted her flushed face to his and gently pulled on his coat. “We must go back,” she said without enthusiasm.

“Hmmm,” Adrian replied, not budging an inch.

She rose on tip-toes and planted a quick peck on the bridge of his nose. “I would rather stay here, alone with you, but we need to go back before we are missed.”

A movement on her head caught his eye. “I think we need to see to your hair first. It seems to have a mind of its own.”

She muttered an expletive, and drew a soft laugh from him as she swerved around so her back faced his chest. “You must fix it then.”

He raised a brow and surveyed the damage. “At your service, my lady, if I can understand how this works, and if you promise not to curse in public,” he said with a wink.

She grinned at him over her shoulders as he lifted uncertain hands to her soft ebony locks. Then she leaned back, and kissed him soundly on the lips. “I promise to be ladylike this evening. So do your best, my love. I have absolute faith in your abilities.”

The sparkle had returned to her eyes. When she smiled at him like that, everything fell into place. Emma was his fate, his destiny. There was nothing that anyone, including Lady de Brandeville, could do about it.

RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens on “Traveling in Words – Otherwise Known as The Cheapest Plane Ticket in The Universe”

Happy Thursday, RG2E Peeps!!!

As many of us are ready to begin our holiday travels, here’s what travelling means to one fabulous author, Natalie Owens…

Nat_Author_pic_4_FB_2

There’s one pleasure I’ve always prized above many others except, perhaps, reading—and that’s traveling. Ever since my first trip to Italy at age 7, I was hooked. Growing up on a small island (Malta), I always wanted to feel “connected” to mainland Europe. The little stretch of land I lived on sometimes got too small for my taste (still does), and I felt the urge to venture out beyond my shores.

I came from a family of humble origins but thankfully, we all loved to travel. So we saved, very wisely, and every two years we went somewhere. Italy, Switzerland, Greece, Austria, Turkey, Holland, England—I lived for those alternate summers that would see us hop on a plane to a new land for a week or two. Later in my adult life, after moving first to Holland and then to America, I discovered another mode of travel—road trips.

When I started writing, I realized that although nothing beats the real deal, I could travel just as much or more in my stories. In fact, I always make it a point to go somewhere special in my writing, or at least set the story somewhere unusual. Something to Live for is set in Malta, my native land. Everything to Lose goes from England to Italy.

And An Eternity of Roses (The Valthreans: Book 1) took me on a delightful tour around the world!

AeoR-Final

I had such a blast with these characters who didn’t want to stay put, neither in place, nor in time :). Here are some of the locations featured in the novel:

St. Albans, Hertfordshire, England.

This is where it all starts—in Belvoir Hall, the seat of the dashing Viscount Bournemouthe and future home of Lady Emmaline Elizabeth Deramore, the viscount Adrian’s one and only love. The Annual Christmas Ball at this sprawling mansion brings in the cream of the aristocratic crop, as well as a few undesirables for the two lovers :). The estate is to be found close to where St. Albans stands today. St. Albans is now a lovely suburb north of London, and being just over 20 miles away, only a short train ride to the big city.

Edinburgh, Scotland.

This is where Emma finds her first solid clues relating to Adam, what happened to him, and his whereabouts.

Leith, Scotland.

A port town in Scotland that features a very captivating encounter between Emma and Adrian.

Bromyard, Herefordshire, England.

In the 1940’s, this place in the British West Midlands swarmed with American military and medical personnel (the 42d Field Hospital), who settled here temporarily on their way from Texas, via Scotland, to mainland Europe to give aid and treat injured soldiers in the WWII conflict. Emma plays a pivotal role in this setting.

Normandy, France.

A very important location that features heavily in all World War II literature as so many American and ally soldiers gave their lives on this soil. Such is brought into relief briefly in the novel.

Rome, Italy.

For a short time, it becomes a second home to my main character, Emma Deramore. After meeting the enigmatic and handsome Max, with whom she forms a bond, Emma remains close to him as he promises to help her. She also starts to become more involved in Valthrean politics around this time. And in this setting, I also explore the amazing Villa d’Este with its fantastic gardens in Tivoli. In the vastness of these picturesque grounds, Emma stumbles upon a sexy scene and comes to a certain realization :).

Amsterdam, Holland.

A place Emma visits for business purposes as a private procurer of antiques and interesting items.

The Kashmir.

The ancient legend of the Valthreans finds its roots in India, back in the days when Buddhism was not yet introduced to the region and the inhabitants still believed in multiple deities and rulers controlling their destiny—such as the Snake King of legend and the River Demon of the Jhelum River. These Indian myths and legends form the basis of the Valthrean story.

Jabala, Kashmir.

A small village in the mountains where Adrian literally drives into a catastrophe.

Marina di Ragusa, Sicily.

A seaside town on the Mediterranean’s largest island. It thrives with the presence of fun and sun seekers in the summer months. The town boasts a beautiful promenade and beach, as well as some exclusive homes and villas. Emma experiences something very strange and disturbing as she walks the promenade here. Something very important in the context of the novel. 🙂

Mont Saint-Michel, France.

An impressive medieval abbey fortress located off the coast of France, also in Normandy. When the tide is high, it becomes an island, surrounded by water and cut off from the mainland. It is simply magnificent and a perfect setting or prop for a story with gothic flair.

London, England.

And this is where it all comes full circle—in good ol’ London, UK. Here the story comes to closure for the star-crossed lovers, not too far from where it all started. Only fitting, right?

In 450 pages, with the cost of a book, you can travel to all this places. How about that? Makes me happy! 🙂

Now it’s your turn, RG2E Peeps…

Do you like to travel in the pages of a book? And would where a story is set determine whether you buy that book or not?

Are Books the Ultimate Matchmaker? RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens Shares Her Thoughts…

Happy Weekend, RG2E Peeps!

Welcome to The RG2E and/or Welcome Back!

Are Books/Ebooks the Ultimate Matchmaker?

We’ve got RG2E Featured Author Natalie Owens thoughts…take it away, Natalie…

Yesterday I met someone on the street who asked me if I’d read Fifty Shades of Gray. Who doesn’t ask that question these days? It seems to be dangling from everybody’s tongue. I went to the beach and there I see them, that silvery tie on all the lounge beds, glistening in the sun and waiting for the owner to return from a dip in the pool. I kept nosing about and discovered, not surprisingly, that the readers were all women. I wondered what their men were reading, and what they thought of this craze that seems to be taking over so many minds, bookshelves, and e-readers…

So my mind started to digress. I thought about an article I’d read in the New York Times a long time ago.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/30/books/review/Donadio-t.html?_r=3&oref=slogin&oref=slogin

According to Rachel Donadio, in her article, “It’s Not You, It’s Your Books”, there are people who actually dump each other because of the books they read, and apparently, there are people who take this fact very, very seriously.

Perhaps, there is some logic to this. Let me just imagine for a moment that I’m single. I go to a bar and spot a charming young man who knocks my socks off. I pat my hair and make sure the buttons on my blouse are fastened correctly as I try to catch his attention. There’s only one little glitch. His attention is very much taken. He seems to be reading a very enthralling passage in a book. Yum, I love a reader, and he’s a nice buff morsel, too. After a while, he closes the book. His eyebrows are furrowed in thought as he must be mulling over the words. I crane my neck and take a peek at the title. Humans among us: A Demon’s Survival Guide.

Huh, I say to myself, unwilling to dismiss this fine specimen of manhood so quickly. I give him the once over. No tail peeking out from his seat, no signs of horns growing under the thick wave of sable hair,no random weird signs. Two arms. Two legs. Two eyes… nice tan skin. He’s clean shaven and wears his shirt tucked in his pants. His clothes are color matched, his teeth are sparkly white (no fangs or rot) and he has no tattoos on his knuckles. He’s a keeper. I ignore my built in alarm bells that won’t quit chiming a REALLY loud tune and frown down at my Dansko clogs. Why didn’t I wear the nice Louboutin knockoffs today?

The chain-smoking angel on my shoulder tries to reason with me. He’s a weirdo, girl. Plenty more fish in the sea.Look at the other guy sitting by the jukebox. He’s rather nice and the fancy red-rimmed glasses match the cute dog on his sweater…

But my discreet gaze insists on focusing on Mr. Hotness with the questionable reading taste. I fantasize this guy’s a really smart cookie with a colorful family history and a weird sense of humor. Sexy, yeah.Demons don’t really exist, right? I need to quit reading scary stuff, really. Do public libraries actually carry those sorts of books?Does he eat brains or drink blood? He looks pretty human to me… Within five minutes I’ve written a long, convoluted story in my head that’s worthy of publication. It’s really romantic, too.

Anyway, the NY article mentioned above goes beyond all that…it talks about “book snobbery” and all that jazz.  So, naturally, I have so many questions mulling in my head.

So, RG2E readers, I’m dying to know – Do reading choices turn you on or off a potential romantic interest? Would you judge a person by the book they’re reading?
