RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on Her Favorite Reader Comment “I Wish It Were Longer…”

Happy Monday, RG2E Peeps!

For an author, nothing beats knowing our readers are really loving our books and want more.

Here’s RG2E Featured Author Stacey Joy Netzel on that very thing…

SJN Author photo

“I wish it were longer…”

As an author, those are words I love to hear. It means the reader wanted more. They loved the book, but didn’t want it to end so they could continue to spend time with their new ‘friends.’ Not to be confused with “The story ended too soon,” which many times means the reader wasn’t satisfied with the way the story ended.

I have a shorter story that has received both these responses. The readers who wish for more usually leave a great review. The ones who say it ended too soon, well…not so much. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions, and this is not to complain about the readers who expected more. I am sorry if I let them down.

The thing is for me, when I wrote the final sentence for that story, it was done. My characters were on their way to their Happily Ever After (HEA), and there was nothing left to tell. Forcing more wouldn’t have satisfied me, or any of my readers.

Then came my story Beneath Still Waters (Part One), in the Tales From The Mist anthology.

Tales_From_the_Mist_cover - final

An old legend tells of a beautiful witch unjustly persecuted who became a ghost bent on revenge…

The danger lies in not believing.

On a sorority camping trip in the Colorado Rocky Mountain National Park, Becca scoffs at the story of the Ghost of Still Waters, despite the convictions of her fellow campers, Liz and Shane. When Liz challenges her to summon the witch’s spirit, will Becca’s disbelief seal her fate?

Amazon, Amazon UK, BN, ARe, Kobo, SW, Goodreads

I was writing to a word count limit, but the closer I got to 8,000 words, the more antsy I got, because I could feel there was no way the characters’ story would truly be finished to my satisfaction within that limit. But I really wanted to be part of the wonderful collaboration of stories, so I wrapped BSW up, and then decided to write a sequel.

Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two) took me by surprise, too. What I’d expected to be about 15,000 words morphed into 35,000 before the characters stopped ‘talking’ and I could give them the ending they’d earned. And you know what…there’s still the remote possibility that one of the characters from this series will start talking to me in the future.

If she does, there will be a Still Waters (Part Three).

In the meantime I’d love to offer five ebook copies of Tales From The Mist today. Hopefully you’ll WISH Beneath Still Waters was longer and pick up a copy of Rising Above (Still Waters Part Two).

Imagine you’ve lived before, but don’t remember or believe it’s even possible. Therein lies the danger. For in not believing and learning from your pasts, the power shifts to the one who would see you dead. Again.

Ryan James never gave much thought to ghosts or the idea of reincarnation—until the appearance of the beautiful Ali Whitman triggers terrifying visions that feel like real life. As he pieces together their past lives, he discovers they aren’t the only players. Worse, if he can’t convince Ali to believe before their past adversary makes the next move, he’ll lose her all over again.

Amazon, BN, Apple, ARe, Kobo, SW

And now, my question for you lovely readers: Do you more often find yourself wishing a story were longer, or thinking it ended too soon?

Let me know in the comments, along with your email address, and I’ll draw 5 winners for a download of the Tales From The Mist ebook.

Thank you for stopping by today!

RG2E Featured Author Lizzie Starr on “The Time Suck of Reading”

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

Do authors take time to read like all of your superfab RG2E Peeps?

Here’s the scoop from RG2E Feautured Author Lizzie Starr…

Great title for a post on a reader’s blog, isn’t it?

I’ve been thinking a lot about reading lately—because over the past year, my reading has really sucked. Instead of curling up before bed with a good book, I’ve let myself get hooked on simple games—Mahjong in a current favorite. Matching tiles does give my brain a challenge, at least that’s what I tell myself. But does it help my writing?

Not in the least.

Authors must first be readers. I’m sure when you ask any author they’ll admit to a voracious reading appetite. An author spills thousands upon thousands of words across the pages of their works in progress. Some are good words, some great, and some destined for the delete button. Sometimes I worry I’m going to run out of words.

That’s part of the reason attacking the TBR pile is so important. Reading refills my well, and refreshed, my own words sprout into new ideas, a delightful turn of phrase, or a new way of saying something old and tired. Reading encourages writing far beyond an author’s original thought of ‘I can do that’.

“If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write. Simple as that.”  ― Stephen King

It’s also so important to read in different genres. Our favorite type of story will always be there, but sometimes, just sometimes, another tales, something we’d never considered, will capture our attention and keep us enthralled for the entire story. And surprise! Often we want more of the same. A new reading love is born.

So is reading a time suck? Not at all. It’s an opportunity for growth, a chance to escape into another place, even another world. Most important, reading refreshes your mind, spirit and outlook better than any drug. Even chocolate! (I can’t believe I said that!)

This year I’m challenging myself in the reading department. I’ve got TBR piles of physical books, ebooks and audio books just waiting for me. There are favorite genres, a variety of books that simply caught my eye and a big pile of non-fiction I’ve been promising myself I’d get to. I’m setting myself a steep challenge—because I know I’m going to learn and discover new authors this coming year as well.

The RG2E is a perfect place to make first contact with a new genre, or an ‘as of yet unknown to you’ author. Take advantage of this excellent reading resource.

And take my challenge to read more in 2013!

To start you off I’m gifting up to 6 ebooks to commenters. You can choose between a contemporary romantic suspense Birds Do It!, or the first book of The Double Keltic Triad, By Keltic Design. Oh, I suppose if you find another of my books you might want, I’d consider gifting those as well. Check out the tabs on my blog  starrwords for my available titles.

Birds Do It!

Macaws as lovebirds?

An avian expert, Birdie Simons is called to help control a cantankerous hyacinth macaw during a young girl’s birthday party. Inexorably drawn to each other, she and single father Garr Logan share an afternoon of joy and bittersweet memories, for Garr’s wife died the same day as Birdie’s newborn child.

Something about Rachelle makes Birdie wonder if the golden-haired girl is her daughter, switched at birth. Then her child’s father returns, dogging her search for understanding and throwing her deeper into fear and confusion.

Ready to move on after his wife’s death, Garr wants the intriguing woman, but Birdie keeps the search, threats and hidden relationships to herself, driving a wedge between them.

Will discovering the truth from nine years ago bring them closer, or forever tear them apart?

By Keltic Design

Allyn Keely, Celtic artist and friend of Faerie, finally finds a man she can love. But she’s older than he is and faces the insurmountable task of helping him realize his destiny in the Otherworld.

Successful businessman, Jaye Zeroun prides himself on his realistic, but lonely, view of life. Until Allyn knots her way around his heart and fills his life with a fantasy he refuses to believe. Then danger threatens their love, forcing him to either accept a deadly battle or lose the very things he never included in his life, a family and a love beyond his wildest imagining.

RG2E Featured Author Nina Croft asks “Do You Buy Book One in a Series or Wait for the Entire Trilogy?”

Wavin’ atchya, RG2E Peeps!!!

Today, RG2E Featured Author Nina Croft has an interesting question:

“Do you buy Buy Book One in a Series as soon as it’s out or wait till the Entire Trilogy is available?”

Here’s Nina’s take on that…

I love reading series—that wonderful feeling you get when you really enjoy a book and you know there are a whole load more to come. I love falling in love with characters and knowing I’m going to meet them again. And getting immersed in a world and knowing I’ll get to visit over and over and no doubt learn new things each time.

And sometimes, I will put off buying a book if I know it’s book one of a series and the rest are nowhere in sight yet (really annoying with traditionally published books where there can be a year between them.)

I’m especially fond of big fat fantasy trilogies but I hate getting to the end and knowing I have a long wait for the rest of the story. So I’ll try to forget I saw book one and wait until the whole trilogy is out.

But I think that also depends on the type of series, because there are all sorts. Some follow one character through a number of adventures, like Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series (one of my favorites). Others follow a group of characters through one big adventure like in The Lord of the Rings or Anne Bishop’s Black Jewel Trilogy (another of my favorites). Then there are the true romance books that feature the same world and the same connected cast of characters but each book focuses on one particular love story with a guaranteed happy ever after, for example Pamela Clare’s I-Team series (yet another of my favorites).

I like them all, depending on the mood I am in, but I’m more likely to buy the latter without worrying about the rest of the series being available. And really, with this sort of romance series, there doesn’t have to be a finite number of books.

My series, Sisters of the Moon, is this type. The books all feature the same world and the same characters but each focuses on a particular couple, the heroines all being telepathic sisters.

When I was planning the release dates of the books, I had to decide how much time to put between them. In the end, I went for one a month, October through to December.

And today, I’m egifting 5 copies of book 3 in the series, Bound to Secrets, which came out this week.

So, if you find a book by an author you love, or just really like the premise of the story, but it’s book 1 in a series, do you rush out and buy it anyway or do you wait until the whole series is out? Let me know for a chance to win an ecopy of Bound to Secrets.

Six years ago, an attack by a rogue werewolf plunged Doctor Connor McNair’s perfect life into nightmare. Now the mere scent of blood awakens the beast within him. He’s teetering on the brink of self-destruction when an intriguing rumor leads him to the desolation of Rannoch Moor and the one woman who might call him back from the darkness.

Part of a telepathic experiment that went dangerously wrong, Keira’s mind will destroy anyone who gets too close. Unable to control her powers, she has cut herself off from all human contact and found a measure of peace hiding on the moors with only the wild animals for company. Until Connor arrives, awakening hopes and desires buried deep inside her.

Connor is determined to save her, but some wounds are beyond the powers of a doctor to heal and time is running out, because Keira’s mind holds secrets that certain people would kill to keep hidden…

Great question, Nina! I read each book in a series as soon as it comes out! And then I fill in the time between releases with new books from other series that are ready! I rarely read books now that aren’t part of a series. I just luuuvvv going back into the worlds I’m enjoying from each author. 🙂

RG2E Featured Author Cate Dean on “How a Character Can Change Everything”

Happy Black Friday, Peeps!

Here’s a superfab fun post to read while you’re waiting in checkout lines today… 🙂

RG2E Featured Author Cate Dean on “How a Character Can Change Everything.”

Take it away, Cate…

If you were here for my last post, I talked about how adding two contest winners as characters changed the tone of the story. Dramatically.

In Carry On Wayward Son, Book 3 of The Claire Wiche Chronicles, it was a character I created that changed the story. But not only the story – this character changed the entire direction the series will take from this point.

Available for $3.99 at:

How did this happen? In one blinding flash of what I call my oh moment. As in “Oh – how did I not see that coming?”

Like the other two books, I wrote this one at a fast pace, not reading it through completely until it came back from my first beta. But this time, I surprised myself. I knew the story – I made it up, after all. But this one character, a character who was supposed to disappear after the story ended, this character became – important.

So important, it affects the lives of every other character in the book, and changes Claire’s life.

It wasn’t planned, but I am stunned and thrilled it happened. Because that character sets them all on a path that I haven’t explored yet, similar to where I was headed with the series, but not the same. It is exciting, and more than a bit scary, but I am looking forward to finding out what happens on that new path.

I hope you all come along with me.

Thanks for hanging out today – and to say thank you, I will be giving away 10 copies of A Gathering of Angels and Carry On Wayward Son. Want to win? Just leave a comment on how something in your life took you by surprise.

I look forward to hearing about your experiences.

Until next time – read on.

RG2E Featured Author Nina Croft on “Mixing Up the Monsters”

Happy Hump Day, RG2E Peeps!

Nothin’ like a little Monster Mash-up for our Hump Day this week! Here’s the scoop from RG2E Featured Author Nina Croft

Last time I was here, I talked about crossing genres and even mixing them up. Today I’m going to talk about mixing things up within the genre, namely mixing up my monsters.

I write mainly paranormal romance, and I’m interested to know whether readers prefer to stick to one type of supernatural being or whether they like a bit of variety. My characters vary from vampires, werewolves to witches and fae. And most of my stories are populated by a whole mixture of supernatural beings.

Today, I’m Ebook Gifting Five Copies of Bound to Moonlight, book 2 in my Sisters of the Moon series (though it is also a stand-alone romance.) The series focuses on a pack of werewolves, but book one, Bound to Night, has a vampire hero (my personal favorite supernatural creature) whereas in book 2, the hero, Sebastian Quinn, is an alpha werewolf.

My love of the paranormal probably started with Anne Rice’s Interview with a Vampire, and since then, I’ve never been able to shake my obsession with that particular creature of the night. And I’m sure that a lot of people, like me, have a preference. Some maybe won’t pick up a book unless it has a vampire, others a werewolf, whereas some are more open and just like the paranormal aspect of the romance…

To me, it makes sense that people would have preferences, there are loads of differences between vampires and werewolves—one’s dead and the other alive, werewolves are way more hairy, and a lot more hot blooded, vamps drink blood, weres like to sink their teeth into a nice bit of….

But for me, the biggest difference between vampires and werewolves is that vampires are loners, and werewolves are pack animals, and that completely changes the way they react to different situations. Vampires are dark and they’re dangerous with a hint of evil. For me, they are the ultimate bad boys. And they hunt alone.

Werewolves on the other hand might have an aggressive streak, and love to fight, but they are not fundamentally evil (unless of course they were evil before they were changed). An alpha werewolf has to be strong, and a brilliant fighter, but his biggest motivation is protecting his pack (unlike a vampire whose biggest motivation is protecting himself).

So, for a chance to win an Ebook Gift Copy of Bound to Moonlight, just let me know—do you like a particular kind of supernatural being in your stories or do you like variety, and which would you rather snuggle up to—a vampire, a werewolf or something else entirely?

About Bound to Moonlight:

Anya, a powerful telepath, has always believed she worked for the good guys–the organization that created her, trained her, and turned her into the ultimate weapon. Her most recent assignment: to assassinate the head of a group of mercenaries. The very man she believes is responsible for the death of her sister.

Investigating the disappearance of three pack members, Alpha werewolf, Sebastian Quinn, finds himself under the scrutiny of a deadly group, The Agency. Targeted by their assassin, he must now fight to save his own life.

Captured and held by the charismatic werewolf, Anya feels the stirrings of passion. For the first time, there is something beyond duty. Now she is faced with a choice — complete her assigned mission or risk everything she has ever known for a chance at love.
