RG2E Featured Author Liz Matis talks “Men Decoded”

Happy Thursday, RG2E Peeps!

RG2E Featured Author Liz Matis is talkin’ “Men” today…as in “Men Decoded”.

Oh boy…here we go…

Photo on 2011-10-05 at 13.49

Even though my male Peruvian dance instructor reads/writes poetry, says that East of Eden reminds him of Thanksgiving and writes things on Facebook like, “When I’m with you, there is a million dances but not enough songs.” and “Fingerprints that you left in my soul.” he will then post as his Facebook status: Counting sheep is boring…. one Playmate, two Playmates….

As a female writing from the male point of view you need to remember that men like sex. Men think about sex. All the time.

What else do you need to know? You need to decode what men say.

For instance below are the results from a Men’s Health magazine survey that asked men to list of The Top 5 Qualities Men Want in a Wife.

And as a public service to women writers I will decode this list – what these men are really thinking are in the parenthesis.

The Top 5 Qualities Men Want in a Wife Decoded:

1. Financial Savvy (will not spend more than $100 on a single item of clothing – including shoes and handbags)

2. Independent (has her own stuff going on so she won’t notice if I go out with the guys for a beer)

3. Intelligent (knows not to walk in front of the TV or talk during a game)

4. Loyal (will not disclosed embarrassing info about him to her girlfriends/family)

5. Sexually Adventurous (will have sex more than once a week)

So there you have it – men decoded.

Here’s a sample from Playing For Keeps.

Once seated, Ryan did his best with small talk as dinner was served. Having Jake and Hannah act as chaperones helped. It kept him from jumping Samantha, who at the moment seemed to be interested in the intricacies of her place setting, leaving her dinner plate untouched.

“You’re not eating,” commented Ryan.

“I’m supposed to tell you I’m not hungry, but I’d be lying. The truth is, my dress is ready to bust at the seams.”

Bust. He couldn’t help it. Really, he couldn’t. His eyes dropped to the material straining against her full breasts. An amber necklace fell just above her cleavage like a sign saying ‘This Way’. Would he be a complete degenerate if he silently wished for the fabric to give way? No, he didn’t think so. He was being a man. That’s what men did, they wished, fantasized, and dreamt of sex. Statistics proved it. Who was he to fight Mother Nature?

“Ryan?”

Whoops, caught in the act. “Just admiring your necklace.” Taking a sip of water, he looked across the table at Jake.

“By the look on your face you want to be my necklace.”

He choked on the water as a laugh threatened to burst out. If he wasn’t mistaken she was flirting with him and he responded in kind. “Or your dress.”

RG2E Peeps: Meet Featured Author Terri J. Haynes, An Army Wife Who Loves Christian Fiction and Reality TV

Wavin’ atchya, RG2E Peeps!

You’re in for a treat today..with another RG2E First-Timer, Featured Author Terri J. Haynes, who’s an Army Wife, with a Masters in Theological Studies, and who also writes Christian Fiction with a dose of Reality TV.

Take it away, Terri…

4f12437057180a7e9d9a8f.L._V391787187_SX200_

My husband told me that I devour books. He’s right. I read like my life depends on it and am willing to go to some great lengths to get my hands on a good book. This is not a new condition for me. I’ve always loved books and I’ve done a few things that some would consider extreme.

Like getting myself locked in the library overnight so I could read all the books.

In my little young mind, one night was all I needed to read all the books in my local library and the dream was born. I spent days thinking of a master plan. Each night, I paid attention to which doors led where and which ones were left unlocked at closing time. On the night I decided to carry out my plan, I fixed myself an extra a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and packed a flashlight and I was good to go.

I didn’t “see no danger,” a phrase my mother used often when people did crazy stuff without considering the outcome. Besides, I was relatively safe. In inner city Baltimore, the library was the last place drug dealers, thugs and murders would be late at night. Besides, they had other things to do at night than to be worried about a crazy kid trying to get herself locked in the library.

Of course, my plan failed. The storage room door that was always left unlocked just happened to be locked that night and I had no backup plan. I was heartbroken, but in retrospect, I think it was God’s way of looking out for children and fools (that saying is not in the Bible, by the way. I know. I read the whole thing). I think my plan was a little of both, maybe more fool than child.

Now that I’m older and hopefully wiser, I still do sorta outrageous things but they are much less extreme than I did when I was a kid. Now I just stay up all night reading and go through the next day exhausted. Or with a crook in my neck. I go to the library and check out bags of books. Maybe I have over 400 books on my Kindle Fire (okay I’m over 500, but don’t judge me).

How far are you willing to go for books?

About Terri:

I’m a native Baltimorean, a homeschool mom, Army wife, writer, prolific knitter and freelance graphic artist. I love to read, so much that when I was in elementary school, I masterminded a plan to be locked in a public library armed with only a flashlight and a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. As I grew, my love for writing grew as I tried my hand at poetry, articles, speeches and fiction. I’m a storyteller at heart. My passion is to draw readers in the story world I create and to bring laughter and joy to their lives.

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, a Master’s degree in Theological Studies and a certificate in creative writing and graphic design, meeting the minimal requirements of being a geek. I’m a contributing columnist for UrbanFaith.com and Believe.com. I live in Maryland with my three wonderful children and my husband, who often beg me not to kill off their favorite characters.

Tempest Day is an expert on helping others find love through her Connection Parties matchmaking service and the methods outlined in her bestselling book, Love Simplified. She’s one step away from becoming a celebrity matchmaker, the pinnacle of her career dreams.

But when a seemingly simple interview on the nation’s most popular daytime television show takes an ugly turn, Tempest is forced to admit a secret she’s carried for years: She’s never been in love. The fallout is immediate and severe. So severe that the only way to fix the damage is to use her own methods on a reality TV show.

Tempest soon discovers that love is anything but simple. The show and its cranky but handsome associate producer, Lance Moretti, challenges all that Tempest thought she knew about relationships, even her relationship with God. RG2E Featured Author Jamie Salisbury on Diving into the Epublishing World

Happy Sunday, RG2E Peeps!

Here’s the scoop on RG2E Featured Author Jamie Salisbury’s dive into the Epublishing World…

Pensive mature woman looking through out the window

I cannot imagine a time when I did not write. A skill that has served me well throughout my diversified professional career that encompassed public relations in and around the entertainment industry, photography, editing, and special event planning.

An avid reader of history, biographies, and romance it’s only natural that I prefer to write romances with characters said to be “so authentic they spring forth from the page and shake the reader’s hand.” No stranger to life threatening situations I pull from life experience when I create my stories. Such as when my family had to escape Chile when I was a teen because of the unstable political climate.

Unable to walk great distances  as a result of  several foot surgeries, I started writing once again as a way to pass the time. With the completion of my first novel Perpetual Love I dove head first into the eBook and digital publishing paradigm. I couldn’t be happier with my decision to grab the publishing industry by the shoulders and force it to pay attention to all I have to offer.

Today, I’m treating you to an Excerpt from one of my books…

timelessSoujournFinallMed (2)

Timeless Sojourn blurb

“It wasn’t supposed to be like this!”, has become the mantra in Anne Harrison’s head since her recent divorce. She was too old to be here…to be single. Melancholy and unsure about anything Anne takes her long time friend Kat’s advice and gets back to her roots…in Seattle. There she hopes to connect with that long ago girl from her childhood and find her confidence again.

Devilishly handsome, arrogant, and cocky Geoffrey Quinn is a man of success. He’s also a man of layers and most people can’t get past what he portrays. No one until Anne.

The last thing either of these people are looking for is a relationship. Anne finds Geoff highly irritating (and young!) at his best, while Geoffrey finds her magnetic and wise.

Seemingly unsuitable and unplanned attractions lights a fiery passion this duo never expected.

Will they take a chance on passion? If they do what happens when the blaze recedes? What will be left ashes or embers?

Excerpt

Fall in the Northwest is quite different from that in north Georgia. It gets cold soon after Labor Day and not being able to go outside and walk without freezing is a drawback.

I have extended my walking perimeter to include a park just off the public docks not far from Kat’s home. I go to sit on one of the many benches lined up along the walkway to watch the boats and goings on.

“Beautiful afternoon, isn’t it?” An Irish brogue behind me inquires.

Without moving to try and see who I’m talking to I merely nod my head. I know who is addressing me.

“May I?” He asked, sitting beside me.

“It’s a free country last time I heard,” I answered regretting my cockiness immediately.

“So, Ms. Harrison, what brings you to Seattle?”

I sit up and look at him. He is extremely good looking I think. “I went through a bad divorce and my girlfriend Kat convinced me I needed a fresh start. So here I am.”

“Kat? Kat Brown?”

“Yes. That’s right, I forgot. You know her beau, Tom Delany, don’t you?”

“Yes, I know Tom quite well. And I’ve met Kat as well.” he replied putting his sunglasses on top of his head. His hair is thick, cut and kept in the fashionable tousled look.

“Do you live around here Geoff?” I inquired noting to myself that if he doesn’t he’s come out of his way.

“No, I live over on Lake Union. I have a houseboat there. I keep my sailboat moored here.” He points out toward the end of the docks where sailboats stay moored, their masts bobbing up and down in the water.

“Hmmm… a houseboat, huh? That fits you, Geoff.”

“I love it, no yard to keep up,” he replied. “It’s centrally located and ideal for a bachelor like me.”

“I’ll have to remember that when it comes time for me to buy.” Ha, I think to myself. It’ll be a cold day in you-know-where before I can buy myself anything, let alone a house.

“Do you sail?”

I nod my head. “Yes, although I have to admit it’s been years.”

“Good. Perhaps you’ll join me sometime.”

Looking down at my watch I note it’s later than I thought. “I’d like that.” I replied. “I hate to rush off, but Kat is preparing for a function and I promised her I’d help her out after I took my walk.”

He stands with me and takes my hand. “I enjoyed your company. Until next time, Ms. Anne Harrison.”

I could just imagine the shocked look on my face when I looked across the aisle from where I was seated one Sunday morning and saw Geoffrey Quinn. Of all the churches in town I had to pick the one he attended. Not knowing whether he came in before or after me I maintained my composure by ignoring the fact he was so close. During a couple of key elements of the service our eyes met and he was cordial but still all I could think was getting out of there. That wasn’t to happen.

“You’re always in a hurry, Ms. Anne Harrison,” I heard his Irish brogue boom from behind me as I walked toward my car. “Why is that?”

I turned around to face him and almost bumped right into him. Damn why couldn’t he be some bald, fat guy instead of this hunk standing in front of me.

“I didn’t realize I was,” I replied.

“Yes, I think you do. Does it perhaps have something to do with me?” There it was again. That tone of arrogance creeping through.

“You wish,” I replied, quickly turning myself back around.

I heard him chuckle, “Could I interest you in lunch?”

“I don’t think so, but thanks for asking.”

“Oh come on, Anne. It isn’t like I’m asking you out on a date. It’s only lunch.”

“No, really Geoffrey, I can’t. Not today. I’m going to meet my sister for lunch. She’s just in town for the week-end and I haven’t seen her since I moved back.”

“Very well, a rain check then for dinner, say this coming Friday evening?”

“That would be fine. Thank you. Call me with details okay?” I arrived at my car grateful to be able to leave.

Geoffrey opened my door. “Friday it is. I’ll call you tomorrow with details. Enjoy your lunch with your sister.”

RG2E Featured Author Dana Delamar on “The Romance of Italy”

Happy Hump Day, RG2E Peeps!

Today, we’re going to Italy…okay, vicariously…with fabulous RG2E Featured Author Dana Delamar, who’s treating us to gorgeous pictures of the setting for her first Ebook Series.

Take it away, Dana…

DanaOne_0057a_200x300 (1)

Thanks for having me on the RG2E today, DeeDee!

Why did I set my first series in Italy? Because I LOVE it! Because Italy is amazingly scenic, loaded with history, and bellissima!

I’ve been to Italy twice, and I’m dying to go back. The food, the history, the people, the countryside–it’s a feast for the senses.

Here are some photos from my trips that I think will give you a sense of why I chose to set my “Blood and Honor” series about the Calabrian Mafia there, and why in particular I chose Lake Como as the main setting. (For those familiar with Italy, yes, Calabria is in the south and Lake Como in the north, but the Calabrian Mafia has spread all over Italy, and in particular has established a major presence in the north around Milan and the adjacent communities. Naturally, my mobsters decided to live in the luxurious surroundings of Lake Como. Wouldn’t you?)

Ah… now don’t you just want to hop on a plane this minute?

In case you can’t, I’m giving away five copies of the second book in my series (see below for how to win)! Here’s what Retribution (Blood and Honor, #2) is about:

retribution_frontonly_final_smaller

An Interpol agent playing a dangerous game. A Mafia princess desperate to escape. A man determined to exact retribution…

Nick Clarkston, a young Interpol agent, threatens to undo the fragile peace between the Lucchesi and Andretti families when he tries to take down the Mafia don father who abandoned him. He allies with his father’s sworn enemy, a mobster both devious and ruthless. The mobster’s alluring daughter helps Nick negotiate the murky criminal underworld, but he soon learns she’s using him. Trapped, and with nowhere to turn, Nick makes a tragic mistake that plunges him further into danger.

Delfina Andretti appears to be the typical Mafia princess–but this princess wants out. Delfina dreams of being a fashion designer, and hooking up with Nick is her ticket out of an arranged marriage. Her feelings for Nick are genuine, but he’s leery of her. Even worse, his heedless drive for justice threatens to get them both killed and to put everyone Delfina loves behind bars–unless she and Nick can forge a new future for their warring families.

Retribution received 4 stars from RT Book ReviewsHere’s what they had to say: “The suspense keeps the pages moving quickly in book two of the Blood and Honor series. There are numerous characters, but Delamar does a wonderful job of incorporating them so that readers keep abreast of the story. A fast pace, credible characters and a complex plot guarantee hours of entertainment.”

RG2E Featured Author Mary Campisi talks “Writing from The Family Trenches with Four Teenagers and an Accident-Prone Mother”

Happy Weekend, RG2E Peeps!

Here’s a terrific Writing Life Behind-The-Scenes Peek from RG2E Featured Author Mary Campisi

I wrote NOT YOUR EVERYDAY HOUSEWIFE from the trenches. If you’ve been there, you’ll know what I’m talking about….does the word teenager make you shudder? My husband and I blended our families, his two, my three. At one point, we had four teenagers in the house. Four of them were girls. Can you say estrogen? There were a few years with three in college at the same time. My husband could give lessons on filling out FAFSA forms. With the blended family, came the exes. Some play nice, some are like my ex-husband. Ahem. Enough said.

Mix in the visit from my mother where she tripped over her suitcase and fell into the door—the night before she was heading to California to stay with my brothers. I drove her to the ER at 3:00 a.m. where the doctor loaded her up with pain meds and said she’d broken her humerus. She spent the next month sleeping on the recliner in our living room with me on the couch. Two months later, after several trips to the physical therapist, my oldest brother flew in to escort her to California. Suitcases are now prohibited in her room.

The night my mother fell into the door was also the night my middle daughter suffered a high fever and night sweats which resulted in a doctor visit the next morning, a pneumonia diagnosis, and admission to the hospital. I spent the next four days between my mother in her recliner and my sixteen year old in a hospital bed. Despite my lack of sleep and horrible stress, I did not once suffer the migraines which plague me when I sleep too little and stress too much. God was indeed watching over me.

Somewhere along the way, I wondered if I could disappear for a little while. Maybe come back in a day? Two? Even after dinner? I’d even fix dinner first. That’s when I got the idea for NOT YOUR EVERYDAY HOUSEWIFE. Life happens. I didn’t run away, instead I ran into the book and wrote it for every woman who will read it and think of her own stories.

By the way, the kids are grown, four out of college, self-supporting, and truly a pleasure. The last one is slowly working her way through college. She’s still a work in progress…maybe to get me all geared up in case I need to write a sequel! As for my mom, she’s visiting at the moment which means eight more days of great cooking, baking, and reminiscing! And all I have to do is keep her upright…

NOT YOUR EVERYDAY HOUSEWIFE

A wise and humorous tale of living large after 40 as women finally make peace with themselves- wrinkles, blubber, neuroses, exes, and all.

Three women embark on a month long ‘discovery’ journey and uncover quite a few tidbits along the way…one bottle of Clairol Midnight will not cover a full head of red hair, and never talk to men wearing polyester pants hiked up with a tan belt. But most of what they unearth is about themselves—who they are, what they really want, what they really DON’T want. The center of controversy is a Maid-for-You mixer which symbolizes a boring, routine suburban life with NO second chances—then along comes insight in the form of Tula Rae, a sixty-something Salsa dancing, Dalai Lama quoting, four time widow in spandex and a gray braid who gives them a different perspective on life, love, do-overs and the real reason a man buys his woman a Maid-for-You mixer, (which she says is all about S-E-X.)

About Mary:

Mary Campisi should have known she’d become a writer when at age thirteen she began changing the endings to all the books she read. It took several years and a number of jobs, including registered nurse, receptionist in a swanky hair salon, accounts payable clerk, and practice manager in an OB/GYN office, for her to rediscover writing. Enter a mouse-less computer, a floppy disk, and a dream large enough to fill a zip drive. The rest of the story lives on in every book she writes.

When she’s not working on her craft or following the lives of five young adult children, Mary’s digging in the dirt with her flowers and herbs, cooking, reading, walking her rescue lab mix, Cooper, or on the prefect day, riding off into the sunset with her very own “hero” husband, on his Electra Glide Classic aka Harley.

Mary has been published with Kensington, Carina Press, The Wild Rose Press, and Jocelyn Hollow Romance. Two years ago, she began digitally self-publishing her front and backlist books. In October, four short months after she offered her contemporary romance, A Family Affair, as a free download on Amazon, Mary had over half a million downloads! RG2E Featured Author Mary Campisi on Writing Through the Pain

Happy Tuesday, RG2E Peeps!

Welcome to The RG2E and/or Welcome Back!

Here’s RG2E Featured Author Mary Campisi to show you the results of Writing Through the Pain.

Take it away, Mary…

Paradise Found was originally published in mass market paperback by Kensington Publishing in 2002. When I received my rights back and decided to bring it out in e-book format, I pretty much gutted the book and re-worked it. It was a long and arduous task but I’m very pleased with the results. Some might ask why I would do this when it had been been published, was an RT Top Pick and loved by many. My response is that as a writer, I am always working on my craft and saw an opportunity to improve the story.

Paradise Found ($2.99) – Amazon,  i-TunesB&N,   KoboSmashwords

I had forgotten that I wrote much of this book through periods of intense pain, but once I flipped open the acknowledgment on that old paperback, it all came back.. I thought I’d share it with you:

Paradise Found will always be special to me because it taught me what spirit and strength and will can do. Much of this book was written in pain – hours of it, days, months—doubled over, with a hot-water bottle pressed against my lower abdomen. The diagnosis was severe endometriosis and I underwent three surgeries in two months, the last of which was a complete hysterectomy.

Well. So glad those days are over!

And this is what I have to say about Paradise Found…Paradise Found explores the delicate balance between ‘blind’ trust and hope, the development and nurturing of feelings—where physical appearances are non-existent—and the inevitable fear that accompanies any relationship when the mask of politeness is discarded and the true self is revealed.

Of course, who isn’t?

What woman doesn’t like to fall in love and enjoy all the romance that goes with it? Though I read the popular and favorite romance books written by Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, Johanna Lindsey and June Lund Shiplett, I was more interested in wanting to write murder mysteries, fictional mainstream like Sidney Sheldon and Elizabeth George, and thrillers like Stephen King.

But when I started writing seriously over 20 years ago—when book publishers paid fairly sizable advances and you needed an agent to sell your work—I joined a romance writer’s group who convinced me to try my hand at writing a romance. I joined Romance Writers of America and I was off—learning something new—all about the world of writing romances. And that is how Wilderness Heart began.

I grew up in Idaho (since the age of five) along the confluence of the Snake and Clearwater Rivers. My parents loved to go camping, which we did almost every weekend while growing up and it was not always to the same place—it was a different state, a different campground, a different national park, a different country.

Around 1974, I think, my parents got into snowmobiling. Let me tell you they are fun to drive and ride. They are also fun to race. We would drive three hours to Red River Ranger Station (a real place I named in the book) where we parked our vehicle, loaded all the gear, food, and clothes onto sleds and rode about 16 miles to Dixie, Idaho. The kids either rode bundled up in snow suits on a sled or on the back of a snowmobile. There were usually several families going, so we might end up on the back of a sled of my parent’s friends.

My parents ended up buying some land and building a cabin a mile past Dixie town. In the summer, we could drive all the way to the cabin. Eventually, they plowed the roads all the way to Dixie in the winter; but we still had to snowmobile a mile to the cabin.

The drive from Lewiston, Idaho to Dixie is about 3.5 hours and has some beautiful scenery along the rivers. There is particular bridge across one of the rivers that is wide enough to take horses across and then a trail leading up the mountain to who knows where. I always wanted to take the hike, but never did, but it got me started on my book idea.  This area was where I have Lyn meet Nic for the first time.

I also had a female friend who was a hunting guide during the 1970s; the time I have Wilderness Heart set. An incident that happened to her while out guiding was one she said I could use in the book, so the book is partially based on a true story about her.

After I got married for the first time, the man I married was an ex-career Navy man who used to smoke and cuss, and they were big conflicts within our marriage because I smoked back then and I ‘cussed like a sailor’, besides the fact he was a control freak. So even though my marriage to that man didn’t work out, I wanted my hero and heroine to have a happily-ever-after ending so I gave them one we all wish for.

Do I like to cook?  Not really!

I hate to plan menus. I’d rather someone cook for me, and of course, clean up their mess when they do. So if you have read Wilderness Heart, you might ask how I combined my mother’s chili recipe with writing a romance, and how the recipe made it into the book.

Mom’s chili was what we ate on our snowmobile rides all over kingdom come of Idaho and it was very tasty and warmed you right up. If she put a lot of Cayenne pepper in it, you couldn’t eat too much. If there were other families riding with us and they ate the chili, someone would always ask, “Why doesn’t the chili have beans in it?”

My mother would reply, “Because true chili doesn’t have beans in it and we like it this way.”

So Lyn, my heroine, made the chili for every guiding trip she was on and it always elicited an argument from one of the men about the lack of beans in it, and this trip with Nic was no different.

I hope you enjoy Lyn and Nic’s little conflicts, and the overall book as I did writing it. Here is your first treat I promised you, the one you can eat (after you make it, of course.)

Wilderness Chili

Ingredients

3 pounds stew meat

3 pounds hamburger

1 large white or yellow onion, chopped

2 large cans tomato sauce

1 dozen cloves garlic, chopped

1 tablespoon sugar

1 teaspoon cumin

1 teaspoon marjoram

1 teaspoon chili powder

4 teaspoons salt

2-3 teaspoons paprika (approximately, see step 6 below)

2-3 teaspoons cayenne pepper (approximately, see step 6 below, or depending on how hot you like your chili)

3-4 tablespoons cornmeal to thicken (see step 8 below)

Directions

  1. Brown stew meat in a large skillet. Place browned meat into a large cooking pot or a crock pot.
  2. Cook hamburger until done; drain (set grease aside for use in step 3 below). Place cooked hamburger in the large cooking pot with the browned stew meat.
  3. Chop the large onion and sauté in the grease from the hamburger.
  4. Fill the cooking pot or crock pot with water until it covers the meat.
  5. Add the 2 large cans of tomato sauce, the garlic (chopped), sugar, cumin, marjoram, chili powder, salt and sautéed onion.
  6. Add the paprika and cayenne pepper until the seething mass looks like the inside of an old red inner tube.  (Until it has a reddish/orange tint to it).
  7. Cook on high if you are using a crock pot for 3-4 hours.  If using a large cooking pot, cook on a medium to low heat (to simmer, not boiling) for 4-6 hours.  Keep checking it for water content.  If water goes way below top of meat mixture, add more water.
  8. When stew meat is tender, thicken the chili with the cornmeal about a half hour before serving. Serve with your choice of crackers or buttered cornbread. Freeze leftovers as this recipe makes a huge pot.  Of course, to make a smaller pot, just reduce the ingredients by half.

If you like beans in your chili, you can add a can or two of red kidney beans. Wilderness Chili is good on hunting trips or camping treks through any wilderness areas.
