What Inspires Me to Write?

“Twisted secrets, extreme passions, and deadly desires”

People often ask me where my ideas come from, what makes a storyline click for me. As my tagline above says, I’m intrigued by the secrets people keep, by the passions that push them to points beyond their limits, and especially by the needs and desires that become the driving force in their lives. In some cases, it is my hero or heroine who will embody some of these aspects, and sometimes it is my villains or antagonists.

It’s often said that a good villain is one who believes he or she is the hero/heroine of the story. For this to be true, the villain must have a strong reason for why they are the way they are, a convincing argument for why they do the things they do. Their passions must be well-developed and relatable, or they will seem one-dimensional. I truly believe this, and I do my best to create villains who are as well-rounded as their hero/heroine counterparts.

In Deadly Obsession, my villain is a stalker. This offered me a fabulous opportunity to delve into the psychology and behaviors of stalking. The villain develops a love obsession (extreme passions) for the hero, Nic Lamoureux, and will do anything to have him return that love (deadly desires). This anything begins small and eventually devolves into murder.

In Deadly Addiction, my villain is a radical extremist, a native man who will do anything (deadly desires) to obtain sovereignty for his people. While his goals are noble, his methods are not. When the hero and heroine get in his way while trying to realize their own dreams, his methods turn deadly. There is no limit to how far he’ll go, what he’ll do. Obtaining his goal is all that matters (extreme passions).

But what about the twisted secrets? No worries. I’ve got those covered, too. In Deadly Obsession, the hero, Nic Lamoureux, has a secret from his adolescence that he’s kept from virtually everyone. In fact, he changes his whole life and keeps a distance from those he loves to ensure his secret stays hidden. The heroine, Lauren James, has her own secrets forged of anger and guilt for which she’s developed her own self-punishment.

In Deadly Addiction, the hero, Rémi Whitedeer, is the villain’s half-white cousin. Rémi keeps secrets from the heroine regarding his past. He also hides the truth about the impacts his relationship with her will have on his future. The heroine, Alyssa Morgan, has secrets regarding her past assignments that she keeps from the hero, until those secrets surface and she can no longer hide them.
